Joseph Edward Rawson, 61, of Fairfax, Virginia passed away on May 6, 2026, unexpectedly of natural causes. Joe was born on July 13, 1964, to Joe and Carol Tamosunas in Worcester, Massachusetts. When his mother remarried, Joe took his stepfather John Rawson’s surname. His teenage years were spent in Groveland, Massachusetts and he worked at his family’s Donut Grove bakery. Joe excelled in academics at Pentucket Regional High School in West Newbury. He was a member of the marching band and acted in the school plays, “The Sound of Music” and “Guys and Dolls.” After graduating in 1982, Joe went on to study at George Washington University in Washington, DC. There he was active in their Catholic student group at the Newman
Center. He graduated with a B.A. in International Affairs in 1986. He worked for the Federal Election Commission in D.C. Joe briefly considered a vocation as a Dominican friar at St. Gertrude Priory in Cincinnati, OH. He returned to the Boston area where he worked for many years with the Massachusetts Association of Realtors as an education coordinator. A move to Providence, Rhode Island found Joe active as a volunteer with St. Peter’s and St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church where he served on the vestry, eventually as Senior Warden. Joe received his Master’s Degree in Library and Information Sciences from the University of Rhode Island in 2001. He was a librarian for Providence Public Library and, later, the University of Maryland’s University College (now UMGC) for many years. In 2010 Joe joined St. Paul’s Parish K Street Episcopal. Joe served on the diocesan search committee that selected Rev. Dr. Marian Budde as the ninth Bishop of the Diocese of Washington.  Joe married Thomas Turner in a ceremony at All Souls Episcopal in D.C. in 2011. His final church home was Falls Church Episcopal in Falls Church, VA. Joe had recently been warmly welcomed as the new Director of Administration at Emmaus United Church of Christ in Vienna, Virginia.

Joe was predeceased by his stepfather John Rawson. Joe is survived by his husband of 14 years, Thomas Turner of Fairfax. He is also survived by his mother Carol Rawson of Salem, New Hampshire, his sister Lynn (Jim) Bergeron and nieces Ella, Callie and Caitlin of Newton, NH and his uncle John Mulvihill (Regina) of Odessa, FL. And he is survived by his father Joseph Tamosunas (Cindi) of South Yarmouth, MA.

Joe enjoyed international travel with a special fondness for Cape Town, South Africa. In the U.S. he fell in love with Galveston.

Joe cherished his cat Seneca. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests remembrances to your local animal rescue shelter.

  1. So glad we met and got to know Joe on our visits to see Tom in Arlington. What a sweet guy! You’ll always be in our hearts. Walt Johnson & Alejandro Flores, Los Angeles

    • I met Joe about 20 years ago when he came to work at UMGC (UMUC). We were colleagues for many years. I remember him as a kind and generous person with an infectious laugh. Since Joe left UMGC we have kept in touch via email and Facebook. Most recently having a conversation about high concert prices and the value of a good meal and a tribute band. I will miss Joe. I will make a donation to BARCS in his name. My condolences to Tom as he navigates this difficult road.

  2. Tom, we haven’t met but I was at GW with Joe. My condolences to you and the family.

As I read the obituary, I heard Joe’s laugh (our Newman Center parties!) and smiled at the memory of his wit and engaging conversations. He was a bright presence on earth, and I know he is surrounded in love, as I hope you are.

    Sincerely,
    Patrice Pascual

  3. I’d like to express my condolences to Tom and the rest of Joe’s family. I first met Joe in Providence when he was working for the public library there. I was investigating library school, and Joe was kind enough to provide me with some good information. Later, when I applied for a job at the UMGC Library, I found out Joe had been hired there. We soon became colleagues at UMGC, and at Largo he occupied the office next to mine.

When I moved down to Maryland, Joe showed me around DC, and we went out for dinner at The Diner in Adams Morgan. He made my move to Maryland from RI a lot smoother, and I remain grateful to him for that.

Again – my sympathy to Joe’s family and friends. He was a good guy.

  4. ALMIGHTY GOD, we entrust all who are dear to us to thy never-failing care and love, for this life and the life to come, knowing that thou are doing for them better things than we can desire or pray for; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. – The Book of Common Prayer
    Roger & Carolyn Turner

  5. Such sad news about an old friend and colleague. Everyone at UMGC will miss Joe–a great person and terrific librarian!

  6. My deepest condolences go out to Tom and to Joe’s family as they navigate this difficult time. Joe will definitely be missed by so many in the UMGC community with whom he worked. I will always remember Joe’s stories of his travels and of his beloved cat and of some of the people he encountered in his previous jobs, etc.; he was quite the storyteller!

  7. I was so sad to hear of Joe’s passing. My condolences to Tom and Joe’s family. Joe and I met while working at UMGC. He was an amazing librarian and had so many interesting stories to tell with such colorful characters. May his memory be a blessing.
