Joyce Kudrecki Torrey of Gainesville, Va., devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away on March 28, 2024. She was 83 years old.

Joyce was born on August 16, 1940, in Chicago, Ill., to Edward and Florence (Kunter) Socks. In 1982, she wed her beloved husband Donald J. Torrey, who passed away in October 2012.

Joyce is survived by her daughters, Sherry J. Kudrecki of Reston, Va., and Sandra J. Kudrecki of Arlington, Va., her granddaughter, Madison N. Cirillo of Washington, D.C., and Sandra’s life partner, Ray Alvareztorres of Arlington. Also survived by her Step-son Paul (Jane) Torrey.

Joyce’s strong work ethic and the respect she garnered throughout her career, which included roles as a title officer and legal assistant, was an inspiration to her family. Joyce encouraged her daughters to pursue higher education and was proud when both received degrees from Rochester Institute of Technology. Sherry majored in engineering and Sandra studied photography as an undergraduate before receiving an MBA from George Washington University. Joyce also took joy in her granddaughter’s academic achievements, with Madison receiving a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s in public health sciences.

A creative and talented needleworker, Joyce produced many intricately knitted and crocheted bedspreads, blankets, sweaters, scarves, and decorative craftworks that are treasured by her family. Her artistic sense included a flair for drawing, home decor, and fashion, and Joyce delighted in dressing stylishly with elegantly coiffed hair.

Joyce loved relaxing on scenic drives in the country with Don. She also enjoyed baking, from Kolaches that harkened back to her Polish and German heritage to her signature peaches-and-cream pie, though her own personal favorite dessert was a simple bowl of ice cream.

Joyce left her native Chicago to live in Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut, and Florida before settling in Virginia near her children. Despite the moves, she stayed in touch with friends and family and spoke often on the phone.

Joyce was predeceased by her grandson, Andrew P. Cirillo, and son-in-law, John N. Cirillo. She is also survived by her brother, Ken (Karen) Socks of Chicago, and her nieces, Denise (Eugene) Massura and Paula (Joseph) Fittanto.
