Joyce Pinholster
July 24, 1942 ~ July 8, 2026
Joyce Pinholster, a beloved mother, grandmother, and teacher, peacefully passed away on July 8, 2026, at the age of 83, surrounded by her loving family at Fair Oaks Hospital. Born on July 24, 1942, in Fairmont, West Virginia, Joyce was a spirited soul whose life was marked by a profound love for music, family, and her faith.
Joyce was the cherished daughter of Dale and Genevieve, and sister to her late brother David. Her life was graced by the company of her two husbands, Joseph Bangiolo and later James Pinholster, who predeceased her. She was also preceded in death by her sister-in-law, Carolyn.
Joyce’s legacy continues through her two daughters, Julia Hols, married to Eric, and Jocelyn Cresswell, married to Chris. She was the proud grandmother of seven: Dillon, Christopher, Noah, Matthew, Elizabeth, Samuel, and John. Though she leaves no great-grandchildren, Joyce’s influence on her family will be felt for generations to come.
A graduate of Barrackville High School, Joyce furthered her education at West Virginia University, earning a Bachelor’s of Arts in Music. Her career as a music educator began at Cooper Intermediate School but truly flourished over the 50 years she dedicated to teaching piano privately. Her students were often inspired by her passion and dedication, which transformed many into lifelong lovers of music.
Joyce was a devoted member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Vienna, Virginia, where her faith was a guiding light throughout her life. Her personality was as vibrant as her music, known for its feisty and passionate nature. Her devotion to God and her family was unwavering, a testament to her character that will be deeply missed.
Outside of her professional life, Joyce enjoyed simple pleasures—listening to classical music, playing tennis, shopping, gardening, and spending sunny days at the beach. Her grandchildren held a special place in her heart, and she cherished every moment spent with them.
A service to celebrate Joyce’s life will be held on July 18, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, located at 2589 Chain Bridge Road, Vienna, Virginia 22181. The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the hospital and hospice staff at Fair Oaks Hospital for the compassionate care and kindness they provided throughout Joyce’s final days.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests that donations be made to the WVU Music Alumni Association Scholarship (WVU Foundation Fund #3S471) in Joyce’s memory to continue her legacy of love and generosity. Joyce’s warmth, music, and spirit will echo in the hearts of all who knew her, forever remembered and cherished.
