Julie Roe
June 5, 1953 ~ June 21, 2023
Our family mourns the loss of our beautiful Julie to cancer. She was kind, gentle, tender, so generous, selfless, humble, beautiful, compassionate, and full of love for everyone, a rare gift. She was an angel who lived every day from her heart and was that rare human being who always saw the very best in people. Those who were lucky enough to know her (family, colleagues, students, friends) will say that she brought unwavering joy to their lives united by a love that was infectious and never-ending. Her love was pure, that person who always put everyone else’s needs before her own and never asking anything in return. Her grandchildren, all eight of them, absolutely adored her as did her three sons, her sisters and me, her husband. Quite simply Julie was our rock, the center of our universe, and our moral core.
Julie is survived by Larry, her husband of 48 years. She was his rock; his friend and he will forever miss her more than words can describe, her three wonderful boys, Kurstin Lawrence, Ryan Christopher and Garrett James, two sisters Jan and Jolynn and eight absolutely beautiful grandchildren.
Julie was born June 5, 1953, in Coudersport, Pennsylvania where she enjoyed an idyllic country life before moving to Fredonia, NY in 10th grade to become the primary caregiver for her grandmother. As the oldest sister, she took on this great responsibility at such young age yet, despite that Julie was able to do well in both high school and college graduating from SUNY Fredonia with a BS degree in Elementary Education degree in three and one-half years.
During her college years Julie and Larry became a couple. Soon after they married and over the next twenty years raised three amazing boys. She was patient, kind, full of love and always tender. Her boys couldn’t have asked for a better role model as they grew to become adults. She is who molded them, and they made her so proud. Julie was the best wife, mother, daughter, sister, colleague, or friend anyone could ask for.
Julie also had eight beautiful grandchildren (Ryler, Zayden, Makaylie, Skylan, Embrie, Lucas, Landon, and Madeline) who adored her. Because of her gentleness and love, they would always look forward to coming to grandma’s house and always wanted to stay overnight or for the weekend so Julie could read to them, help them with beautiful child art or make them great big breakfasts. Even while she was in the fight of her life, her grandchildren showed their love by being with her to the very end.
As a teacher, Julie was beloved and treasured by her students and fellow teachers. Despite her retirement six years ago, many of her students still return to Great Falls elementary to pass along messages about how they felt about her or how much they learned from her. As for her fellow teachers, below is an excerpt from an email describing how one of her colleagues felt.
Oh, Larry! This is just so cruel. I am so sorry. Please know we have a MILLION stories to share about Julie. I am sitting at her old table with the legs covered in duct tape. I’ve been using it all year hoping some of her teaching magic would rub off on me. Last night I was thinking of all the Julie-isms that we love. “It upsets my nature…”, “De-lish!” (Always said with a twinkle in her eye and an offer of a bite of whatever it was.), and my favorite…”glorious” which could be said about anything- from a certain shade of blue, contrails in the sky, or a pattern on a leaf – always said with awe and excitement. I love the way she could explain something so patiently and matter-of-fact. Step by step, with encouragement. I always wanted to capture that tone and cadence in my teaching. I love Julie for a million different reasons. I don’t want to intrude on your time. I just want her to know that she made a HUGE difference in so many lives in so many ways. When former students come back to visit their faces light up when they say “Mrs. Roe… is she still here?” I took a picture of the student who came back last week. Her name is Kiernan. I’m rambling now. It was never the same once Julie left. She was our Camelot. My heart is full of love and respect for her.
She is so loved by so many. Just last week a student who is now a senior at Langley came downstairs looking for her. A fellow teacher shared with me on the playground how much she learned about teaching math from Julie. She has touched and impacted so many lives.
Simply put, God found a model for what “goodness” is …… and it was Julie.
And yes…… her apple pie was the best!
To Our Dearest Julie,
You were the Best;
The Best Friend,
The Best Teacher,
The Best Mom,
The Best Sister,
The Best Grandmother,
The Best Wife,
The Best Sister-in-Law,
The Best Person
May the Good Lord Hold You In The Palms Of His Hands…. we will cherish your memory always.
With All Our Love,
Peter and Sharon
My mom will be remembered as the kindest person with the most generous heart. Her compassion and love for others was everything to anybody who was lucky enough to have known her. There was an infectious joy that she felt for people which thousands of kids saw on daily display as she taught them at Great Falls Elementary school. Her kindness had no limits, and she put everyone before herself. All. The. Time. She was an effortless educator and one of her most notable phrases was “I don’t know, can you? (The correct way to phrase the question is “May I…..”) Her apple pie was the best you’ve ever tasted.
We’ll never understand why it had to be her time. I’m crushed. Our “Mama Bear” was the glue to our family. She was so young with so much life left to live. If humanity gave awards for being too selfless and too kind, she would’ve been a shoe-in winner. She was everything that you want in a Mom, wife, Grandma, sister, co-worker, neighbor, etc.
Mom, you were selfless literally up to your last moments. We might not remember the days, but we will remember the moments. I’d be nothing without your unconditional love, infections smile and boundless kindness. Heaven has taken my two dear angels just 6 months apart. My heart pounds and aches like no other. Farewell Mom, until we meet again someday, somewhere.
I met Julie when she worked at Aldrin Elementary and we liked each other from our first hello! We lost touch for a few years while I was off having kids, but caught up again when Larry coached my son Zach in hockey! We picked right back up where we left off. When a job in Special Ed. opened up at Great Falls she called me up and told me that she had already spoken to the principal about me and I needed to apply! I will forever be thankful to her for that recommendation! Julie was a loyal and kind friend, and an inspirational and dedicated teacher, wife, and mother. She had a great smile and a wicked sense of humor! She was a true blessing in my life!
Thank you Kim

Mrs. Julie Roe was part of our 6th grade team at Great Falls Elementary School for many years (more than a decade and a half, I believe) and a part of the GFES teaching community long before my time.
As a career switcher and new teacher in 2015, Julie was absolutely instrumental in helping me find my way with a delightful and unique sense of humor, encouragement, and a kind but blunt way of telling me to “get it together.” Julie modeled highly effective math instruction for every type of learner in her classroom in a way that helped me learn and learn quickly outside anything I could possibly pick up in a training or in my coursework. Her students and colleagues adored her.
I am forever thankful for the opportunity I was given to work directly with Julie and the 6th grade team for my first three years at Great Falls. Even after Julie’s retirement in 2017, we all celebrated in grand style as a Great Falls community when her son Garrett became part of the Olympic Ice Hockey team in 2018.
Julie will be greatly missed, even as we grieve alongside her husband Larry, their three sons, their families and grandchildren, and extended family.
Dear Momma,
You were to me as you were to others, the center of my universe. Angelic but with a little bit of bite. Simple but with deep layers of complexity. Patient but with an ability to push. Loving but nothing. Caring but nothing. Giving but nothing. Compassionate but nothing.
If you were to go to the auto garage…how’s your mom doing? If you were to go to the local restaurant for lunch…how’s Julie doing? If you were to go to the hockey rink…how’s Momma Roe doing? If you were to graduate from high school and wanted to thank a teacher…where can I find Mrs. Roe? Her ability to connect with others was unparalleled.
I would talk to her for hours upon hours. Often, I would ask her for guidance and as I was trying to explain the situation, she would give a nod here or a smile there, a raise of the eyebrows, a blink of the eyes, a puckering of her lips and a silent “oh,” a shrug of the shoulders and finishing with a glance that couldn’t be mistaken. She would not say a word and I would get the clarity on what I was looking for. She would guide me through the choices all with little cues. Those were my favorite. She had a listening ear that spoke back without ever saying a word.
I promise that moving forward with our kids, my wife and I will tell them exactly who you were and pass your spirit to them as best we can. It won’t be perfect but it’ll be the best that we can do, that’s all you ever asked for in the end.
Thank you for being the mother that others dream to have. Thank you for showing me what love in a marriage looks like. Thank you for teaching me that learning is never done. Thank you for being my first soccer coach. Thank you for constantly reminding me about proper grammar. Thank you for allowing me to watch what a giving heart does for others. Thank you for instilling values in me that I will live with for the rest of my life. Thank you for being the grandmother that kids adored. Thank you for telling me the truth if I needed to hear it. Thank you for supporting me in all walks of life. Thank you for all that you did, noticed and unnoticed.
I love you Momma, forever and always.
Larry, I was very sad to receive the news about Julie. She was a very kind, sweet, and loving person and I am sure that you and your family will miss her very much. Be somewhat warmed in your sorrow by knowing that she is now with God, having completed her mission and that one day the two of you will be reunited.
After a lifetime of deep love, it is very difficult to say goodbye to that person who has been so special to you throughout your life. I hope that in this difficult time you can try and reflect on the good times and bring those to the forefront of your thoughts. I believe those reflections will help in the coming days.
One of the things that I remember about Julie was her wonderful sense of humor and her love of her children. I have attached a photo of her and Debby in those happier times.
Going forward rely on your children and their families to assist you in everything you might need to accomplish so as not to try and shoulder the burden alone. I am sure you will receive all that you require from them.
Please accept our sincerest condolences to you and your family.
Julie is the first of 16 grandchildren in the Loftus family. Being the 15th grandchild, I always looked up to Julie. Eventually Julie became a teacher and I remember in my elementary years when she would bring me along to set up her classroom before the start of the school year. I always thought that was so special that my cousin was a teacher and I got to be a part of classroom set up. I am not sure I was very helpful but she always included me. Many years later when I became a teacher in the same county, my path crossed with others that taught with Julie. When I would explain that Julie is my cousin everyone always spoke so highly of her as a friend and colleague. She truly is a special person and will be deeply missed. Forever in my heart.
She had a difficult early life but it did not have a negative impact on her. She was the most loving caring person I ever knew. I grieve her death but will cherish her memory for the rest of my life.
My deepest sympathy to her family,
Uncle Mick

Julie was my cousin. My fondest memories of her are when she became a mom. I had the experience in babysitting the boys when they were babies and observed how calm and loving Julie was. She was always grounded in her family. When the boys were little, she took me to my first Capitals game where I saw her enthusiasm for the sport. Julie always radiated a state of mind that was peaceful and wise. Her spirit will always be shining. – Molly Loftus

I was so Lucky to have Julie not only as my Sister but my Best Friend. Growing up it was Julie and I conquering the world together – WE DID IT!
She was the most loving, caring, unselfish person, life dedicated to others before herself.
Almost Perfect!

God has a true Angel!
Thank you Julie for being our Big Sister – You will be missed.
Forever in My heart My Dear Julie – Love You – Jan
Your wings were ready, but our hearts were not! Until we meet again
This week the world grew smaller and the heavens ever brighter – we lost our beloved Julie Kay.
The always loving, caring and giving, very first and best friend we’ve ever known – our big sister.
There are no words that add comfort here. No-one can ever fill the void that’s been left behind.
She touched everyone she’d ever met and made their lives a better place for having known her.
Her parents and grandparents, her uncles and aunts, her sisters, her husband, her children, her grand children, her nieces and nephews, her friends and neighbors, her co-workers and her students, all were touched by her, all loved her and now all will miss her dearly.
Good-bye dear Julie, and Thank you for being so much to all of us.
Love, As Always,
Jolynn, Tom & Trisha
Julie was the mother in law any girl would dream of, but she was my sister’s. And I thank God for that. She always made my sister feel like a daughter. Along with Larry, they welcomed Lucia into their family, a tight loving pack of wonderful Roe men and amazing her, Julie. She was the heart of it. She guided the family and showed them unconditional support no matter what. She inspired so many of us to be better family members, and to love unconditionally. She leaves a legacy of unity, and strength along with kindness and love.
Banter between her and Larry always made me laugh, they made me want to have a person to grow old with and giggle with, the way they did.
Julie, you will forever be missed. You are one of kind. Thank you for so so much!
Larry and boys, you are all loved! You are not alone. And I will always be there for you as you have been there for me and my family. The way Julie always was. Let’s keep her legacy going.
From my parents Tito and Magy:
Dear Julie, you will live in our hearts forever. You left us too soon and without even a good bye. Darling, you will always be missed and remembered. We will do our best to support and love our children as you and Larry always did. Good bye our friend.

Dearest Larry and family,
Our hearts are heavy knowing sweet Julie has left this world. We will always remember her kind and generous nature and we are forever grateful to have known her and spent time with her whenever we could. We enjoyed spending time together at Nats games and dinners at Pazzo Pomodero’s restaurant in Vienna. She was such a pleasure to know and talk to each time we were together. Her family was the most important part of her life and and she always put them first and foremost in her brief time here on earth. She will be forever missed but her kindness, generous spirit, and love for her family will always remain with you and everyone she knew. Please accept our sincere condolences and prayers for you all as you move forward through this tragic and difficult time in your lives.

Aunt Julie,
Although our paths didnt cross as frequently as they should have in life, you never seemed that far away. Thank you for being a wonderful Aunt, but more importantly, for being a loving and caring bigger sister to my Mom. You will never be replaced. It just doesn’t seem real that you are gone.
