Karen E. Lacy Ransford

Karen Elizabeth Lacy Ransford entered heaven on Monday, July 13, 2026. She passed away peacefully at home in Reston, VA, with her family by her side after battling a lengthy illness. She was born July 12, 1940, to Robert and Marion Burdick in Mantorville, MN. She was the oldest of five children. Karen spent her childhood on the family farm and was active in 4H and many other organizations through her years at home. In 1958, she graduated from Kasson-Mantorville High School and then attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. Karen graduated from ISU in 1961 with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics and later in life earned a Masters degree from Virginia Tech in Educational Administration.

Karen married Robert D. Lunt on November 25, 1960. Together they built a loving family and were blessed with four children: Robert T., who entered heaven shortly after birth; Susan, Kirsten, and Robert M. “Monty”. Karen’s greatest joy was her family. She cherished her roles as wife, Mom, Grandma, and “GG,” always offering unconditional love, encouragement, joy, laughter, and, most importantly, the gift of time together. She delighted in watching her family grow and was most proud of the legacy she built through them. Karen found great comfort in knowing that her unwavering faith in Jesus Christ, along with the values of kindness, perseverance, joy, and love that she instilled, would live on through her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Karen’s lifelong career in education began after graduating from Iowa State University and spanned nearly five decades. She devoted her professional life to serving the students, teachers, and families of Fairfax County Public Schools, VA, as both a teacher and a school administrator at the middle and high school levels. Throughout her career, Karen earned the respect of colleagues across the school division for her wisdom, integrity, and unwavering commitment to excellence. In recognition of her leadership, she was appointed by the Superintendent to the prestigious Career Advancement Review Board, where she reviewed teacher appeals for advanced career levels.

Karen expected excellence from herself, her colleagues, and her students, but she paired those high expectations with unwavering support, kindness, and genuine care. She inspired those around her to do their very best while making them feel valued and appreciated.

Her extraordinary dedication to arts education was recognized with the Virginia Music Educators Association’s Music Administrator Award, the organization’s highest honor for a school administrator. She was selected from a distinguished field of nominees, with letters of support that reflected her steadfast commitment to ensuring that the Fine Arts flourished under her leadership.

Even after retiring, Karen’s passion for education never diminished. She continued serving Fairfax County Public Schools as a substitute school administrator where she remained in high demand as a trusted leader, mentor, and wise counselor.

Karen is survived by her two daughters, Susan (Troy) Hawksford, Kirsten Bruestle (Jimmie Shelquist), and her son, Monty (Karen) Lunt. Also surviving her are ten grandchildren: Benjamin, Elizabeth, Alexandra, Catherine, Will, Annie, Sam, Anna, Caroline and Casey along with her great-grandchildren: Micah, Jovianna, Delaney, Wren, Madeleine, Cooper, Ella, Graham (and baby brother arriving Sept 2026) and Bennett. Karen is survived by her three sisters: Nancy Sheppard, Patricia (Bernie) Beaver and Jane (Mark) Erickson and her sisters-in law: Lois Burdick, Sarah Stark, and Mary Lunt. She is also blessed with many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends who will also greatly miss her.

She was preceded in death by her son, Robert T. Lunt, her parents, Robert and Marion Burdick, her brother, John Burdick and her husband, John G. Ransford.

Karen’s Celebration of Life service will be held at South Zumbro Lutheran Church, 68905 280th Avenue, Kasson, MN, on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at 9:30 am. Family will receive guests before the service at 9 a.m. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Mantorville, MN. A gathering with family will be held at the Hubble House after interment.
