Katylee McInerney

katylee mcinerney
Katylee McInerney, age 80, of Vienna, Virginia passed away at home on July 12, 2023 with her loving husband Joseph at her side, after a five year struggle with cancer. Katy’s family and many friends will remember her consequential life — her love of the Lord Jesus, her gift for friendship and humor, her courage in the face of illness and pain, and how to live out God’s gift of life with joy and grace.
Katylee was the loving daughter of Harold and Georgia Shunk of Miami, Florida; beloved wife of Joseph; mother of Kristen, d. (Kurt), Michael (Gwyn), Matthew (Shelly), and Erin (Paul); grandmother of Olivia (Matthew), Andrew (Shelby), Ivy (Ben), Ellie Grace, Scarlett, Tullah, Spencer, Emma, and Tyler; and stepmother via Joseph to Jason (Mili) and grandsons Jasoncito, Jeremy and Justin. She is also survived by six great grandchildren.
Professionally Katylee was an educational researcher, curriculum writer, and an award winning science teacher. Prior to her cancer diagnosis in 2018, she was a dedicated Eucharistic Minister at St. Agnes Church, captain of the Christ House cooking team, and an active participant in parish prayer ministries. In addition, Katy will be remembered for her many arts and crafts skills: cooking, baking, sewing, gardening, drawing, piano and organ playing, and her calligraphic writing via letters of encouragement she sent to family, neighbors, and friends. Katylee delighted in babies and children and took special pride in the “gooey in the middle” brownies and cookies she prepared for neighborhood youngsters of all ages.
The Viewing/Wake will take place at Money and King Funeral Home (171 Maple Avenue W. in Vienna, VA  22180) from 2pm to 4pm on Sunday July 23rd.  Free parking is available. Katylee McInerney’s funeral Mass will be held at St. Agnes Church (1910 N. Randolph Street Arlington, VA, 22207) at 10:30am on Monday, July 24th. A reception in the Parish Hall will follow the Mass. Private burial will follow after the reception.
Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made in Katylee’s name to Christendom College, 134 Christendom Drive, Front Royal, Virginia 22603 (Attention: Leslie Mathew), or online via giving.christendom.edu with Katylee’s name in the memo line.

  1. Thank you Grammie for being a light ever since I was received into Saint Agnes as a small infant. Your courage and devotion to the statutes of the Lord has a great impact on my spiritual development. I saw this in the way you and Grampa Joe loved each other. It is a holy model for others to emulate. May you be tremendously blessed in Heaven!

  2. My deepest condolences and prayers to you Jos and to you family. Katylee will certainly be missed. She was an absolute blessing to me when we met as colleagues at Westat, but immediately became wonderful friends. Her spirit was that of Christ and she shared the love and joy of God always. I would look forward to her coming by my desk each day but especially on Monday’s when she would share recaps of her weekends and the different expressions of God’s goodness. I will always keep her in my heart and just remember the great conversations and prayers that we shared. May the God of comfort be with you all in her absence, but we do have the blessed assurance that she is with Jesus until we meet again.

  3. My dearest friend
My heart is broken from losing you, for you occupied a big piece of it.
We didn’t speak often, but our friendship carried a spiritual bond ever since we met and started our mission at Christ House.
Your patience and kindness towards those in need was an inspiration that changed my life.
I still have a “ mustard seed “ Christmas card in plain view on my kitchen wall , that you sent me a few years back.
It helps me go through difficult days.
I’m sure that now, you are like a bird, shining like a sun on the branches of the Mustard Tree.
    Katylee, I will miss you!
You used to call me treasured friend, but now It is I, who have a treasure in heaven.
I know that our Lord will console the hearts of Your dear husband Joe and your children and grandchildren that you loved so much.

Rest In Peace, my sister in Christ!
