laban sadtler

April 3, 1953 ~ March 5, 2026

Born in: Washington, DC
Resided in: Warrenton, VA

Laban Elliott Hershey Sadtler went home to the loving arms of Jesus on March 5th, 2026. He was born on April 3, 1953 in Washington, D.C. to John Beale and Vivian Kathleen Sadtler. Laban grew up in the city of Falls Church, Virginia attending its public schools. Laban fought the good fight as he battled Parkinson’s symptoms, Lymes and kidney disease. He fought with a smile amidst his pain and suffering. He never wavered in his faith, even when the illnesses were unbearable, choosing to praise the name of Jesus.

Laban met his “beautiful” bride Bev at Northern Virginia Community College in 1973. Following her to East Tennessee State University they married on August 26th, 1978. Their 47-year marriage in Northern Virginia was marked by love, laughter, and faith as they raised the family he cherished. They were members of Capital Church for over 40 years investing in their church community. Laban incorporated everything with his family in mind putting their needs before his own. He sacrificed his own desires to ensure his family was always taken care of. Laban was an avid Washington sports fan who cheered faithfully for the Washington Nationals, Commanders, Capitals, and Wizards.

Laban founded his own insurance agency under Nationwide Insurance. He approached each client with care, considering them as family and took pride in providing honest service. He was thankful to pass it down to his son at retirement, yet devastated that his illnesses forced an early retirement grieving the loss of daily interactions with the people he had come to love.

Laban’s faith in God was the foundation of who he was. He lived out God’s unconditional love to all he encountered. He never met a stranger. Laban always said it was his goal in life to put a smile on the face of every person he encountered. Even in his suffering, he cracked jokes and made those around him smile and feel loved.

Laban was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He will be deeply missed by his wife and best friend Bev; his children, Josh (Lyn) Sadtler and Becca (Chris) Bahlo; and his four cherished grandchildren, James, Daniel, Jon, and Brielle. He is also survived by his brother Jack and countless family and friends who were touched by his kindness.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Laban was my cousin and a friend. We played together when we were younger and stayed in touch during our teen and college years. When he started his Nationwide insurance business our family became his “ best clients.” My family is still with Nationwide and Josh is our agent.
I remembered Laban’s humor, patience, and his love for the Lord. My prayers and love are for his lovely family: Bev, Josh, and Becca. I will miss you dear cousin.
    Ellen Sadtler Hill

  5. My sincere condolences to Laban’s family. He was my insurance agent, but more importantly, he was a kind and decent gentleman. His business practices were based on personal interactions, and I appreciated the time he spent getting to know me and my four children. May God bless this dear gentleman’s soul as he enters his home in God’s arms.
    In Christ’s Name,
    Claudia Offutt

  10. Becky Cooke:

When we moved to McLean, VA, and looking for an insurance agent, Laban Sadtler was recommended to us. I always enjoyed interacting with him and never doubted he would find us the best situation for our needs. When my children left home and had insurance needs, he readily helped them as well. Laban was always trustworthy and dealt with us with integrity. After he retired, Josh filled his shoes in like manner. Laban, we will see you again in eternity at the end of our days.

    To God be the glory!

  11. To Laban’s family and friends, Sending lot’s of love to all! Laban issued car insurance for me 45+ years ago. I think I paid in cash. Laban always made me smile and I thoroughly enjoyed our times over the years together. Laban was a very special and caring person. God Bless! Charlie and Sue Fairchild

  12. Deepest condolences to the family. Laban was a true professional, serving multiple generations of our family. He was always friendly, responsive and an absolute class-act. We always felt that we were doing business with a good friend. There’s no question that he’ll be missed by many.

  13. My sincere and heartfelt condolences to Bev, Josh, Becca and the entire Sadtler family. My mom, Terri Woods, worked for Laban in his Vienna, VA insurance office for many years. She enjoyed working with him so much, and they had many uplifting conversations that centered around their faith in God. My mom went through a rough time with colon cancer, as well as with metastatic breast cancer (which sadly caused her death in 2021). Laban was always so understanding about time my mom needed off from work to deal with her illnesses and always welcomed her back to the office with open arms and much joy! I felt that I got to know Laban (and Bev, Josh and Becca) through the lovely stories my mom shared with me from her time working for Laban. What a kind, sweet man, who certainly dealt with his own health issues so bravely, and with the support of his wonderful family. God bless the Sadtler family and may you feel God’s closeness, comfort and peace during this sad time. With much love, Susan Athey

  14. Josh and Family,
My sincere condolences , I do hope your fond memories of your father, would help you during these days.

    Maryam Dadgar

  17. From business to baseball, I hope you know how much I enjoyed our conversations, Laban. You were such a kind-hearted man who always took the time to make sure I was doing ok. I meet so many people in my profession, but only a few leave an impression that stands the test of time. You were one of those people, Laban. I’m grateful to have known you, friend—my love and strength to the Sadtler family.

  18. Bob and Mary Buenting
Will have to say, that even though we never did have the pleasure of meeting Laban in person, he became a friend to us! He was always there to answer the phone when we need to talk to him or had an insurance issue of some sort – he never, even once , passed the job back to us to get done – he always stepped right in and took care of us and our needs! What a blessing he was to us – more than once!
I can’t imagine how much he will be missed by his family – quite a wonderful human being, indeed! We are so sorry for your loss… Mary & Bob

  19. Laban was my first and only insurance agent for many years. He was always so pleasant and calm to speak with. He will be missed by many.

My deepest condolences to the Sadler family.

  20. I am friends with Laban\’s son. If children are a reflection of their parents, then Laban was one heck of a guy. My deepest condolences to the Sadtler Family.

  21. Dear Bev, I’m so sorry to hear about Papa’s passing. My heart goes out to you and your family. He was a special person, and I’ll always remember him. Papa was such a kind soul, and he fought his battle with incredible grace, patience, and strength until the very end. Rest in peace, Papa.

  22. Dear Josh and family,

I wish we could attend the ceremony, as your Dad was so kind and helpful in all our interactions. We have been customers for years and always appreciated his very personal approach.

His memory will always be a light in your spirit and your heart.

    All our sincere condolences,
    Robbie and Dominique Namy

  23. Dear Josh,
As a fellow ETSU graduate, your dad and I had many conversations over the years about our alma mater. His caring and kindness was always appreciated in everything he did for me. I will miss him.

  24. Our thoughts and prayers are with each family member. Laban was such a part of our family for many years. I never purchased a vehicle without consulting Laban, not necessarily for his approval but leaning on him like a big brother. I can’t even remember not knowing Laban. My husband and I have been in our home 30 years and everyday has been insured by Nationwide, under Laban’s watch and Josh’s reins upon Labans retirement. When it came time for our daughter to look for insurance there was never a question, call Laban. He has left a legacy and shoes to fill and such has been done. May God bless all who knew Laban, he will be missed.
In Rememberance Victoria and Thad Lewon

  25. My deepest sympathy to the Laban family. Laban has been my insurance agent
for many years and helped me in so many ways. When his son took over the
business, he was just as great as his Dad. What a wonderful, caring family.
