Remember Me
To the living, I am gone,
To the sorrowful, I will never return,
To the angry, I was cheated,
But to the happy, I am at peace,
And to the faithful, I have never left.
I cannot speak, but I can listen.
I cannot be seen, but I can be heard.
So as you stand upon a shore gazing at a beautiful sea,
As you look upon a flower and admire its simplicity,
Remember me.
Remember me in your heart:
Your thoughts, and your memories,
Of the times we loved,
The times we cried,
The times we fought,
The times we laughed.
For if you always think of me, I will never have gone.

  1. The poem Thanatopsis by William Cullen Bryant was favored by our mother.
The main idea is that all living things, that were once nourished by sun and nature, return into the Earth in death. Therefore, we have nothing to fear when think about our own mortal ends.
Dear brother, may rest in peace.

  2. I am saddened at the loss of my cousin Louis (Tubby) but know that he is in a better place. He believed in the scriptures, and I remember him passionately discussing excerpts from the book of Revelations with my mother. He gave me my first computer when I was a teenager in the 80s – a TI 99/4A. This early Texas Instruments device (picture posted on his Timeline) predated the Mac and Windows PCs today. It introduced me to programming using the Basic language and fueled my interest in the field of Computer Science. This has benefited me greatly throughout my career, from Oracle databases (Cable & Wireless), Computer networks (Cisco), Application virtualization (Citrix Systems), to most recently medical device robotics (Stryker). I am grateful to Tubby whose kindness contributed to the lighting of that fire. He had a big heart and was quite generous to his little cousin and other members of the family. During COVID he sent out many helpful emails to family and friends about practices for avoiding infection and remedies for recovery for those affected. These included various videos produced by experts he found, as he wished to ensure we were equipped as possible to be safe, and deal with the scourge of the pandemic. He was a brilliant man with great ideas and inventions, a true visionary. I look forward to seeing Louis again at the resurrection, when he can be taken into God’s Kingdom to enjoy eternal life.

  3. Cannot say that I knew him well; however, Tubby was quite influential on this 13-year-old boy, and he helped me build my first significant vacuum tube amplifier. He was a patient teacher, and I was in awe of his knowledge and admired his confidence and cool, laid-back demeanor. Happy to have had our interactions and will forever treasure the memories. Rest in peace Tubby. 🙏🏽

  4. My dear nephew Louis was a man of integrity. His kindness and wry sense of humor was endearing, as was his towering intellect.

Louis was only two years younger than I. Our relationship was more akin to a first cousin. In fact, he used to tease me by calling me Aunt Audrey in front of my friends when we were teenagers. I was not amused then but grew to understand the humor of it later.

The possessor of a fine mind, he was an expert in computer science and often built his own computers, building me one when hackers wiped my hard drive. He worked on the team at the original telephone company, to transform the phone pad’s current configuration. I have had the utmost respect and fondness for my childhood friend for my entire life.

Tubby got his nickname from the LP that he was given, in the fifties, produced by Danny Kaye, a spoken word story titled, Tubby the Tuba. The Tuba, is never the lead instrument in the orchestra and so Tubby was sad about it, so the conductor wrote a piece where Tubby was the leading instrument.

In his early education he attended Cathedral Choir School, the historic Roman Catholic primary school of the Kingston Catholic Archdiocese. His baritone was unusual for one so young. Hence the Tuba reference.

Louis loved the Jamaican Christmas Cake and so I started about seventeen years ago to make one, a big one for him every year. I am no baker, but I taught myself, studying the composition, method and the months of soaking fruits (in Port and Sherry and Wray and Nephew overproof rum), for this wonderful fruit cake. His Mother, Eulalee, my eldest sibling made it every Christmas, and I observed and licked the mixing bowl clean, along with Louis, Victor and Cecelia, his brother and sister.

Last year, in the middle of July, Louis called me and asked me to make one for him. Little did he know that I only made it once a year, because of him. Also, the ingredients are seasonal, so I was unable to acquire the seasonal fruits.

Last Christmas I made an extra one for his birthday in January. I am glad I did.

  5. Louis. Tubby. Mummyman. These are all the names for our nephew Louis who has sadly passed away, he was given the last name by Uncle Tony whilst they were both still living in Jamaica. Louis went to live in New York and Tony in Wales in the UK but they did meet again on a few occasions when Tony and his wife Denise visited New York where we stayed at his home with his Mother Eula and we both always enjoyed our time together. Louis sent us lots of emails and photographs which we cherished. Louis was a bit of a joker as he would always say Uncle Tony who was only 10 years his senior and Aunty Denise who was 5 years his junior. We shall miss him. Rest in peace Louis.
