Margaret “Peggy” Dow Costello, 73, of Springfield, Virginia, passed away on the evening of January 3, 2024, after a brief battle with lung cancer.

Peggy was born on March 11, 1950, to Shirley and James Dow, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Peggy met her loving husband of 53 years, D. Brian Costello, at Fairfax High School, where they were both graduating seniors. After Peggy graduated from High School in 1968, she attended college at William and Mary before transferring to the University of Virginia in 1970 to study education. After graduating from UVA with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education, she taught elementary school until her retirement in 1978 to raise their three children, James, Rebecca, and Kathleen. Her greatest pride was being a mother. Peggy was an active and devoted member of Kirkwood Presbyterian Church throughout her life, serving on various committees. She volunteered for every school and church activity and chaperoned many scouting trips. In 1997, Peggy returned to work for The Parent Institute, in Fairfax, Virginia, retiring in 2019. She is survived by her two sisters, Nancy Shaw (Michael) and Kathryn Borghesani (Dean); her husband, Brian Costello; her son, James Costello (Betty); and her daughters Rebecca Costello Viverette (Jason) and Kathleen Perry (Wes); as well as her two grandchildren, Noah Costello and Shepherd Perry.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 26, 2024, at Kirkwood Presbyterian Church, located at 8336 Carrleigh Parkway, Springfield, Virginia 22152. https://www.kirkwoodpres.com/ She will be laid to rest in a private burial ceremony at Fairfax Memorial Park. Donations in her honor may be made to Kirkwood Presbyterian Church.
