March 29, 1954 ~ January 4, 2026

Born in: Bethesda, MD
Resided in: Oakton, VA

Mark Heuer of Oakton, Virginia, passed away peacefully at his home on January 4, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Melanie Heuer; his daughters, Jennifer Heinke (Dane) and Melissa Heuer (Dan); and his two beloved grandchildren, Grace and John Heinke. He also leaves behind his sister Ann Barfield (Ed), and brothers Tom (Patti) and Steve (Valerie) Heuer.

Mark was born on March 29, 1954, at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, to the Reverend Bernard Heuer, a Navy chaplain and Lutheran minister, and Margaret (Young) Heuer. He spent his childhood in Ohio and Pennsylvania with his father and stepmother, Elizabeth (Trettle) Heuer, and graduated from Mars Area High School in 1972. He went on to attend Capital University, where he studied music and English, followed by Yale Divinity School, the University of Maryland Business School, where he earned his MBA, and The George Washington University Business School, where he completed his Ph.D.

Much like his academic pursuits, Mark’s professional life was wide-ranging. He served as a press secretary and chief of staff on Capitol Hill, worked as a business executive, and later became a professor of business strategy at Susquehanna University. A dedicated researcher and writer, he co-authored two books and published numerous academic articles and peer-reviewed papers focused on environmental sustainability. As a Fulbright Scholar, he taught internationally at National Taiwan Normal University, Senshu University in Japan, and at the University of Kassel and Hamburg School of Business in Germany. Although Mark retired from academia in 2021, mentoring Melissa through her graduate thesis remained one of his most meaningful experiences as both a father and an educator.

Mark’s life was deeply guided by his Lutheran faith, and it was through the church that he met the love of his life, Melanie. Together, they lived as faithful stewards in Christ. They met while volunteering at N Street Village through their fellowship with Luther Place Memorial Church and were married in October 1981. They began their life together in Dupont Circle, Washington, DC. In 1984, they welcomed their first daughter, Jennifer, and five years later their second daughter, Melissa. In 2011, to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary, Mark and Melanie renewed their vows on Waikiki Beach, a place that held cherished memories from many family travels.

After overcoming his first diagnosis of prostate cancer in 2011, the disease returned as stage IV prostate cancer in 2021. Mark refused to let the prognosis define him and remained committed to living fully. He treasured time with family and friends, whether that meant sitting through 45-degree weather at Grace’s lacrosse games or enduring an unexpected hailstorm at John’s t-ball game. His love of baseball, especially the Washington Nationals, was unwavering. Even during losing seasons after their 2019 World Series win, Mark rarely missed a game, whether watching from home or attending in person at the ballpark.

A memorial service will be held at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 1545 Chain Bridge Road, McLean, Virginia, on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at noon. In lieu of flowers, please consider a charitable donation in Mark’s memory to Zero Prostate Cancer.

  4. Mark was my boss at Boise Cascade Office Products. I always thank God for Mark Heuer. He was the Best Boss Ever! He was fair, kind, respectful, gracious, and helpful. He was a genuine Christian. He spoke so warmly about his family and his faith. He would beam with pride talking about his beautiful family. I could feel the love, admiration, and respect he had for his family. My heart is heavy over his passing. I send my sincerest condolences, love, and prayers to Melanie and her family. May our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ bless and keep you through this difficult time.

  5. I had the pleasure of being Mark’s student and Teaching Assistant at Susquehanna University. Class with Dr. Heuer was always interesting and entertaining. I am grateful for the time I was able to spend with Mark at SU from 2012-2014.

  6. Mark was the youngest of the Heuers, and I knew his sister, Ann, one of my college roommates and her twin brothers, Steve and Tom, better. But I enjoyed getting to know Mark and his lovely family and was always eager to hear of his accomplishments, which were generously shared by his proud brothers and sister. What Mark accomplished during his lifetime is inspiring, and the way he dealt with his illness was very brave. God Bless all the Heuers.
