Martha “Marty” Lee Scanlon, 83, of Charlottesville, Virginia, passed away on August 31, 2026.

Marty was born on June 2, 1943, in Washington, D.C. She was the daughter of Edwin and Josephine Gardiner and grew up in Chevy Chase, Maryland.

After raising her two sons, Marty worked as a leasing manager at Tysons Corner Center, where she formed many lasting friendships. She especially enjoyed her trips abroad to exotic locations throughout Europe. Later in life, she embraced writing as a creative outlet and published her children’s book, Edwina the Cutest Sheep in the World. The story follows a family of sheep scattered across the world who reunite for a joyful celebration, reflecting Marty’s deep belief in the importance of family and staying connected.

Marty loved cheering on her sons at their sporting events and found great joy in bringing people together. During her years at Ashby Ponds, she organized social events for her building and helped foster a strong sense of community among her neighbors.

Marty was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William P. Scanlon, who passed away on August 3, 2017.

She is survived by her sons, Bill and Bryan Scanlon; her grandsons, Zach, Andrew (and his wife, Kate), Luke, and Mike; her granddaughter, Hannah; and her sister, Mary Jo Breckenridge and her nieces and nephew, Jeannie Trautman, Gwynn Breckenridge, and John Breckenridge.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Losing an aunt means saying goodbye to someone who was a second mom. We loved your enthusiasm to travel with us no matter where we took you and we could always rely on you for snacks! You never left the US without muffins or cookies for those just in case situations. Our family won’t be the same without you. Thank you for the memories – I’ll carry them forever! Your kindness won’t be forgotten. Rest in peace Aunt Marty!

  2. I had the pleasure of meeting Marty at Rosewood Village and had the privilege to get to know her and her lovely family. Marty was a very kind individual and loving and hard headed, hahaha dont get me wrong she had her days where her and I butted heads, but at the end of the day we loved each other and would look at each other and bust out laughing and go back to normal the way where she knew I was just trying to help her and push her to be the best version of herself that she could be. The best memory I have is of us talking about the farm I have and when she found out I had sheep we would talk for a long time about it and it just so happens that my dad had gotten a black nose sheep and I couldn’t wait to tell her and when I did she gave me a signed copy of her book and a list of names I should name him. My son picked a different name and when I told her I could tell it bothered her, so I talked to my son and we came up with Big Ed and when I came back to tell her that she smiled the biggest smile I’d ever seen. Everyday after that I would tell her stories of what Big Ed had done and gotten into the day before and we would laugh. Then one day she had asked me if I had heard of the movie Sheep Detectives and I said yes and she said she wished she could go watch it and I wanted to make that happen for her. So I signed into my account on the smart TV in Coastal Cove at Rosewood and got pillows and blankets and played the movie for her and the entire time she was smiling and thanked me and told me I had made her year doing that for her. That is why I do what I do it is to make the lives of the residents a little easier and to make them happy if I can and that day I definitely did just that. Marty will be missed at Rosewood RIP girl love ya 💗
