Mary Anne Catherine Hayes

Mary Anne Catherine Hayes passed away peacefully at home
on July 16th, 2021, surrounded by loving family.
Mary Anne was born in Fargo, ND on September 4, 1931, the
daughter of Thomas Edward and Mary Catherine (Boyle) Ruddy.
Soon thereafter, her family moved to Grand Forks, ND, where her
two brothers were born.
After she completed the Nursing Program at St. Catherine’s
College, Minneapolis, MN, she received her North Dakota RN
certification in September 1954. She was on staff at St. Michael’s
Hospital until receiving a direct commission in the U.S. Navy
Nurse Corps as a Lieutenant, Junior Grade on May 23, 1957.
Following a tour of duty at the U.S. Naval Hospital Portsmouth,
VA, she was promoted to Lieutenant, USNR, and posted to the
Naval Air Station Quonset Point Medical Clinic, in Rhode Island.
She married Lieutenant Michael Francis Hayes, USN, on June
16, 1962, and continued her Naval Service until December 14,
1962. She loved to travel, and Navy life certainly helped. In
addition to taking the family to live in Barcelona, Spain and
Naples, Italy to follow Michael’s ship around the Mediterranean,
she lived in No. Kingston, RI; Carmel and Carmel Valley, CA;
Virginia Beach, VA; U.S. Naval Academy Annapolis, MD; Virginia
Beach, VA; Stuttgart, Germany; Fairfax, VA; Carmel Valley, CA;
and finally, Fairfax, VA.
Surviving in addition to her husband, Michael, are her children
and their spouses: Michael Hayes, Jr. and his wife, Anne, of
Bedford, MA; Bridget Gallagher and her husband, Patrick, of
Burke, VA; Catherine Cummins and her husband, Stephen, of
Annapolis, MD. She was a loving grandmother to eleven
grandchildren: Maeve Gallagher-Gilheney, Cormac, Liam, Caitrin,
and Ciara Gallagher; Catherine, Meaghan, and Michael Hayes;
Cecil, Mairead, and Broinninn Cummins, and one greatgrandchild,
Eamon Michael Gallagher. In addition to her parents,
she was predeceased by her brothers, Michael Thomas Ruddy
and Patrick Edward Ruddy.
All are welcome to join the family at a Memorial Visitation on July
27, 2021 at the Money and King Funeral Home, 171 West Maple
Avenue, Vienna, VA. There will be a recitation of the Rosary
during an open-casket viewing at 5:30pm, continued by a closed casket
viewing from 6:00-8:00pm. Please also celebrate Mary
Anne’s life at a Funeral Mass at 11:00am on July 28,2021 at Our
Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, Vienna, VA, followed by
a reception at The Auld Shebeen in Fairfax, City. Interment in
Arlington National Cemetery will be at a future date.

My heart is heavy; I lost a wonderful friend. However, I am filled with joy when I remember how Mary Anne’s friendship enriched my life and the lives of my family members. She lived her life well. I am glad her suffering is over and she is safely in the arms of God. Rae
I really didn’t know Mary Ann too well. I remember, however, the first time i met her was in her daughter Cassies’s home for the purpose of learning about America Needs Fatima. That was a blessed day and I thank her for bringing that group into my life. It has encouraged me in the daily recitation of the Rosary and I still contribute to the organization. It tells me the kind of person she was. I will pray for her and thank God for being friends with her wonderful daughter and her family
Michael and Family, For 15 years we have enjoyed being around Mary Anne. From the Irish Soda bread for St. Patrick’s Day to her Navy nurse cape for Halloween she has helped make life at Saintsbury memorable. She will be missed. Dear Bridget, Sincerest condolences on the passing of your extraordinary mother! In Mantua, I remember her daily behaviors being so steadfast and revealing her deepest beliefs: a love of family, such graciousness to friends, and faith. She has been a steady anchor for us all.
