Mary Ellen Sherburne

Mary Ellen Sherburne of Vienna, Virginia, passed away on May 16, 2026.

Mary Ellen was predeceased by husband Paul Hoshall and former husband Franklin Smith as well as family members John Sherburne, Mary Sherburne-Wills, Jo Ann Sherburne, Jerry and John Shadle, and is survived by daughters Kristen Pappano and Patricia Golden, four grandchildren: Madison Pappano, Mitchell Pappano, Megan Golden, and Jacob Golden, and sisters Sue Reed and Joyce Gentry, as well as extended family and many cherished friends.

Growing up in Falls Church on Hillwood Ave, she graduated from Falls Church High School. After high school she met and married her first husband Franklin. She became devoted to her marriage and raising their daughters. She always worked to help support their family, and as their girls got older, she began pursuing her own career. One of the highlights of that very successful era was a position with a defense contractor which worked on software for Marine One. That afforded her the opportunity to tour Marine One, meet President George H.W Bush and work closely with his communications team.

She eventually changed careers and embraced her true passion. She began her education in Thanatology and became a Grief Counselor. For decades, she has worked helping countless individuals and families deal with the loss of their loved ones. Her kind and caring heart was a true gift in her career, which she never considered work because when she was helping others it truly brought her joy.

Later in life she met her second husband Paul Hoshall. They had a grand love affair while they were together on this Earth. Above all, the light that illuminated her soul was her four grandchildren. There was nothing she would not do for them and her love for each of them was absolutely immeasurable.

Mary Ellen was a blessing to everyone who knew her, and she felt the same about them.  She will be deeply missed.

Guestbook

  1. Mom, may the words of others, written here, be felt in the hearts of all who read them; may the angels who are with you, help carry our words up into the heavens so all will hear them. May our words from deep in our hearts travel swiftly and stay with you, as they will with us; until we meet and are able to see you again, and speak them in your presence, and wrap you tightly in embrace.
    With immortal love,
    Kristen and Patricia

  2. You will be in my heart forever and I’ll miss you and your beautiful smile and hugs. May your soul rest in peace Mary Ellen. I love you, you are a unique and only person I met in my life that has a pure heart and love for everyone. “Love Ruta”

  3. Mary Ellen, you were a bright light in a dark world. You had a heart quick to love and a spirit that boldly stood up to injustice. I loved your sparkling sense of humor and deep kindness. Rest peacefully from a life well lived, dear friend! You will be deeply missed.

  4. She was one of the most amazing women that I’ve ever had the privilege of knowing. I love her and I love her family and she will always be in my heart

  5. ME, you will be so very much missed. I wish I hugged you more, we could’ve talked one more time, and I could hear your laugh again. You’ll always be dear to me and all of your friends from the Acadia. Game night won’t be the same without you. You will brighten those around you in Heaven as your soul was always so luminous bright like the stars in the sky! It’s not goodbye but just see you later. Until we meet again, my friend! Love you always!

  6. A life is like a song we write
In our own tone and key,
Each life we touch reflects a note
    That forms the melody.
We choose the theme and chorus
Of the song to bear our name,
And each will have a special sound,
No two can sound the same.
So, when someone we love departs,
    In memory we find
Their song plays on within the hearts
    Of those they leave behind.

Sending my love and sympathy to Kristen, Patricia, and extended families. Thank you for all the laughter, road trips, and great times! Thank you for all the love, respect, and kindness you showed my mother it meant a lot to her. She’ll be the first one at those pearly gates singing Halleluia Here Comes Mary Ellen!! Rest easy and God’s perpetual light shine upon you forever.

  7. Mary Ellen,
I light a candle for you, for all the hearts you turned from gray to blue. May God’s love eternally be with you. My friend, mentor, forever so true.
May your glow forever shine bright. This is my prayer for you.

  8. To all who mourn the loss of dear Mary Ellen please “Be Gentle With Yourself” as she would often say. 🙏❤️🙏 Eileen Tallent
