  1. Max was an inspiration to all of us at Nottoway Park…a real tennis icon. He will be sorely missed since he just played with us a few weeks ago.

  3. Apart from being a model player among the Notoway tennis group, Max was a great human being. I was always touched by his kindness, understanding, positive and supporting attitude. We will miss him dearly.

  4. Max was a rare combination with a brilliant mind and soft heart. His competitive attitude was infectious and spurred great teamwork. Loved talking to him about his beloved Razorbacks. In awe of his tennis longevity, the sport he truly loved. Rest in peace Max…you were the best of us. 💔

  5. Max and I fought hard together on the tennis court. I owe him a lot of sets. I remember his tennis grip was always the biggest thickest I’d ever seen. And he had huge hands and would make it work. I will miss our talks about football. He will be missed by all.

  6. I knew Max as an engineer and project manager in the government. Our paths crossed at least 3 times from the 90’s until he retired. He was calm, polite and a good friend to me. Gentleman describes him best.

  7. We loved Max. He was good and kind and funny. He was loyal and dependable; talented, courageous, generous and incredibly patient. He was fun and fun loving- there was always more laughter when Max was around. Those who met him only once remembered and asked after him. He was absolutely the best friend, brother-in- law, person anyone could want. He was truly an honorable man.

  8. Max was the definition of a true gentleman. He had a rare gift for making others feel seen and valued, always offering a kind word, a sincere compliment, or encouragement – especially on the tennis court. I’ll always admire his gracious spirit and the love and devotion he showed to his beloved wife. My deepest condolences to Max’s family and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

    • I miss and love you Uncle Max. You greatly blessed our family with your laughter, fascinating stories and big hugs. You always shared the fullness of your generosity and love; except for the occasional ruthless scheming during family card games like Spades and Hearts, in which you were hilariously obvious with a wink and a smile. 😆 We kids learned many fun, valuable and great lessons from you while seated around Nana’s kitchen table listening to tales of our history and hopes for all our futures. I carry you in my heart along with endless memories, through tears and smiles, your encouragement and joy for life. We will carry on, along with Aunt J, with that joy…until we meet again.   9. Max was the oldest cousin in the Carter family and he always treated us younger kids with kindness and a smile. Max…you will be missed but we look forward to seeing you again when we all go home.

  10. I first met Max over 30 years ago and remember thinking to myself “I will be bored playing tennis with that old guy !” Didn’t take me long to know better. This Bama boy will miss his Razorback discussions. Most of all, I will miss a true friend.

    Looking forward to meeting Max at that tennis court upstairs.

  11. Every pod of orcas has its unique way of communicating. In human society, an “OK” can mean many things; it may be an acknowledgment, an unspoken understanding, or the quiet assurance that all is well. In Nottoway, it is a registration of Max’s expression – signaling that an off-duty househusband is about to take on your booming, sweat-inducing tennis forehand.
     
    In a world of billions, every individual possesses certain qualities: wisdom, kindness, humor, perseverance, and compassion. Somehow, our dear Max was greedy enough to carry many of them all together. We were fortunate to stand shoulder next to this iconic individual.
     
    Upon this recent duty call from the upstairs, our dear Max – a tennis rival, football pioneer, and loving husband – has moved on to another journey. In memory of the Sir Carter, we celebrate his wonderful life, cherish what was given to us, and will carry on his legacy by appreciating the days ahead.
     
    That “OK” will continue to echo in my head, along with many other thoughts – Max has left the Nottoway (as they once said – Elvis has left the building)
