Just shy of her 84th birthday, Merrill Sleight Quast passed peacefully on July 2, 2025, leaving behind not only a loving family but a legacy of warmth, style, celebration, and boundless generosity. True to the way she lived, Merrill asked not for mourning, but for joy — and if there’s one thing she taught all who knew her, it’s how to celebrate life, in all its beauty, color, and chaos.
Merrill reunited with her beloved husband of 65 years, Rear Admiral Harry Stillman Quast, who passed just three weeks earlier. Together they built a life that spanned continents, careers, coastlines, and countless family dinners. While Harry once said, “The Navy was my job, not who I was,” for Merrill, her identity was woven through every role she played — Navy daughter, Navy wife, mother, entertainer, traveler, gardener, hostess, friend, and “Grams” to nine adoring grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Born on July 28, 1941, to Navy Captain Robert Sleight and Barbara Merrill Sleight, Merrill’s adventurous spirit began early. As a proud Navy child, she called many places home — from California to Maryland to Hawaii. She attended Punahou Academy in Honolulu and graduated from Robert Millikan High School in Long Beach, CA. A born performer, she sparkled in school productions and had a dance card that rarely saw an empty slot. Friends were certain she was destined for Hollywood. Instead, she found a different kind of leading man and life — meeting Harry Quast while in college in Louisville, Kentucky. He proposed at the Kentucky Derby, and they married when Merrill was 18.
Their Navy life together included homes in Newport, Charleston, San Diego, Hawaii, and Vienna, three children (Harry “Skip,” Catherine “Cathy,” and Jennifer), and enough adventure to fill several lifetimes. Merrill thrived in her role as a Navy wife, orchestrating family moves, raising children while Harry was at sea, and embracing the beautiful chaos of military life. She loved nothing more than joining Harry in exotic ports of call — Japan and Hong Kong being favorites.
Merrill’s talents were endless and always infused with her signature flair. She was a master hostess, renowned for throwing unforgettable parties, complete with scavenger hunts, themed dinners, and her famous “Martini Hunts.” Holidays were her Olympics — no detail too small, no table too full. She never missed a birthday or anniversary and was the queen of the perfect, personal gift (often from her ever-stocked gift closet).
She was an avid reader, puzzle solver, and loyal member of many book clubs. She delighted in word games like Wordle, Scrabble and crosswords and could hold her own at any bridge table. She was a diehard fan of the Washington Redskins and more recently, the Nationals. She enjoyed working at the U.S. Naval Memorial in Washington, D.C., ensuring those who served were remembered with dignity and gratitude.
Merrill had an unmatched sense of style — a natural elegance that turned heads without trying. In 1972, she modeled Jackie Kennedy’s inaugural ball gown during America’s First Ladies on Parade — a perfect pairing of grace and glamour.
She was a talented gardener, a meticulous travel planner, a wonderful cook, and a legendary baker — known especially for her meringues, caramel frosting, cheesecakes, and her secret-to-perfection pie crust. She cherished planning and executing the many Quast family vacations that became the stuff of legend, drawing together generations with laughter, food, adventure, and just a little bit of controlled chaos.
Above all, Merrill loved her family deeply. She poured her heart into every relationship, making time for one-on-one moments with her grandchildren, offering her home (and laundry room) to their friends, cheering from the sidelines, and welcoming all with open arms and a full fridge.
She is survived by her three children: Harry (Skip) Quast and his wife Shelby, Catherine Davis and her husband Dan, and Jennifer Norris and her husband Todd. Her greatest joy was being “Grams” to nine beloved grandchildren: Lauren (Cara) Esposito, Scott (Sarah) Davis, Brynn (Eric) Davis, Lyndy Quast, Brooks (Kaitlyn) Norris, Jack Merrill (Grace) Davis, Tyler Norris, Bennett Norris, and Emma Norris. She was also blessed to be Great-Grams to Amelia Esposito and Harrison Davis.
She is preceded in death by her husband Harry, her parents, and her brothers Peter and David Sleight.
Merrill never missed a detail, never forgot a birthday, never turned down a chance to plan something special. Her legacy is one of sass, laughter, kindness, style, and fierce devotion — to her family and her extraordinary life.
If Merrill were here, she’d raise a glass and say, “The life of the dead is placed in the memory of the living – Cicero” And so, remember and celebrate a woman who made everything more vibrant, more generous, and more unforgettable just by being herself.
An interment with her husband Harry will take place at a future date at Arlington Memorial Cemetery. A joyful memorial celebration will follow; with food, stories, music, and a full table surrounded by the people she loved most.

I will miss your beautiful spirit at The Virginian. You and Harry always brightened up my evenings. It was a pleasure to serve you both.
