Milton Sims Newberry

Milton Sims Newberry, Colonel US Army (ret), died at sunrise on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at Walter Reed Military Medical Center after a brief illness.
Colonel Newberry was born in San Antonio, Texas on July, 16 1937. His parents, Brig. Gen. James P. Newberry (USAF) and Patty Sims Newberry, were native Texans. A graduate of Washington & Lee High School in 1955, he considered Washington, DC his home.
Colonel Newberry was a member of the class of 1959 of the United States Military Academy at West Point. He served 26 years in the Field Artillery with two tours of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. He served as a battalion commander at Fort Leonard Wood, MO, and at many other posts throughout the United States and in Germany. His final duty was as a Division Chief on the Army Staff in the Pentagon.
He received a master's degree in political science from the University of Kansas in 1972 and was a National War College graduate.
After retirement, Colonel Newberry was the Vice President for Army Operations at Burdeshaw Associates Limited, a Washington defense consultancy, until his death. He garnered the unparalleled respect of his peers and of a broad range of his many clients. He was a man of loyalty, unwavering principles and an ever present hallmark laugh. Always a "dapper dresser," he took great joy in being physically fit, shining his shoes, and going to the Kennedy Center with his friend, Betty Eggleston.
He will be missed by literally all who knew him. Milt was preceded in death by Regina Saffa Newberry of Lawton, OK, his beloved wife of 50 years.
He is survived by his brother, James Presnal Newberry II of Richardson, Texas; two children: James Milton Newberry of McLean, VA and Diane Newberry Lott of Paris, KY; a son-in-law, Chester Trent Lott Jr.; and three grandchildren: Jonathan Milton Newberry, Chester Trent Lott III, and Lucie Sims Lott.
A funeral service will be held at St John's Episcopal Church at 6715 Georgetown Pike in McLean, VA at 3 o'clock in the afternoon on Tuesday, 14 March. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Donations can be made in Col. Newberry's honor to MD Anderson Cancer Center.
