Nancy Maria Decker
February 4, 1965 ~ September 20, 2022
Nancy Maria Decker, 57, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, September 20, 2022, at home in Vienna, Virginia.
Born on February 4, 1965, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Ruth (Van Campen) Decker.
Nancy grew up in the village of Germantown, New York, where she graduated as class valedictorian from Germantown Central School in 1983. She graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering in 1987 and completed a Master’s degree in International Business from the University of South Carolina in 1991. Nancy later trained and qualified to be a Certified Public Accountant.
Following in the footsteps of her parents, who were both lifelong public servants for the state of New York, Nancy entered public service in the early 1990’s. She was briefly employed by the U.S. Navy before starting a career at the International Trade Administration of the U.S. Department of Commerce. During her time at ITA, Nancy worked as a trade analyst, an accountant and, more recently, as a program manager in an antidumping/countervailing duty unit. She travelled the world for her work and trained countless new trade analysts, who appreciated her easy manner and expertise.
Apart from travel, Nancy’s passions included hockey, golfing, live music and musical theatre. As a child, she was often taken to see the Broadway shows by her mother. Nancy had a deep interest in family genealogy, tracing her roots back to the early Dutch settlers of Upstate New York. She was a dedicated member of Vienna Jammers Percussion Ensemble, from which she derived great enjoyment. She was also an active member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Vienna and tried to live her faith each day.
She is survived by her daughter Sophia Decker, who was her greatest pride and joy. She reveled in showing Sophia the world and never failed to plan the greatest adventures for the two of them. Their time together was too short but Nancy’s energy and excellence lives on in Sophia. In addition to Sophia, she is survived by several cousins and great friends
She is predeceased by her father, who died on March 9, 2006, and by her mother, who died on September 14, 2014.
A viewing will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, October 9, 2022, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Vienna. It will be immediately followed by a memorial service at 3:00 pm and a reception at 4:00 pm at the church. Contributions in Nancy’s memory may be made to Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Vienna, Virginia, at elcvienna.org/give.

We never knew we could miss Nancy so deeply and so strongly, but here we are You will be on our heart , and our mind forever and always. Rest In Peace
May her memory be a blessing.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
I was very sad to hear about Nancy’s sudden passing. We started at the Department of Commerce in the early 1990s together and used to be office mates and friends for many years. We lost touch and through the magic of Social Media we connected again and then kept in touch. Nancy will be missed and our love and condolences to her daughter whom she deeply loved.
