Nathaniel "Than" Williams
February 7, 1975 ~ July 18, 2022
Ret. Lt. Commander Nathaniel “Than” Williams of the U.S. Coast Guard lost his long, courageous, and valiant battle to an insidious and debilitating disease on July 18, 2022, in Vienna, Virginia. He is survived by a grief-stricken and heartbroken family who fiercely loved him, were pulling for him, and wanted nothing more than for him to find the peace he so desperately deserved, most especially his wife, Christine (née Golden), and his incredibly loyal, devoted, and loving children, Fiona, Charlie, Maeve, and Finn. They will miss him forever and hold him in their hearts and minds until they meet in Heaven.
Than is also survived by his heartbroken parents, Charles and Janet Williams of Durango, Colorado, his in-laws Tom and Ann Golden, of Brightwaters, NY, brother Ben Williams, his brothers-in-law Garret Golden, Bill Snyder, sisters-in-law Kim Williams, Kate Golden, Annie Snyder, and his nieces and nephews, Fallyn, Logan, Norah, Jack, Vivian, Will, Tommy, Gavin, as well as aunts, uncles, and cousins who all loved and cherished him. He leaves behind too many friends and community members to mention by name.
The nickname “Than” often confused or surprised people. They often called him “Dan” or expected to see a short Asian man walk through the door. Than didn’t mind. He always got a kick out of surprising people by showing up--all 6’3” of him. Most people will remember his beautiful smile, sparkling eyes, and gentle, quiet presence. He disarmed everyone with his seemingly effortless calm and kindness. But his family will remember him for so much more. Most especially his unconditional love for all of them. He loved each one of his children more than anything in the world. He was always there for them. He stopped whatever he was doing if they needed him. He was selfless and loyal and had each one of their backs. He was a man of integrity, who taught his children to honor their word, and always stand up for what was right. He loved a good time too. He loved to watch the Dallas Cowboys play football, and his mood could quickly tell you the score. Charlie remembers his dad watching him mimic the plays as they watched together. Than figured out that if he made chili, the Cowboys game could become a family event. Than loved to drive his Porsche 911 and delighted in taking tight turns on winding tree-covered roads. Music was a passion for him. He loved RUSH and more recently found solace in Christian Rock. Maeve and Than had a special bond around music as he tried to keep up with current selections, but they still bonded over the classics. He loved to cook and showed his love through food. When Christine was first pregnant, the doctor said it was important that she have two eggs every day for her and the baby’s health. So every day he made sure Christine had two eggs—and did the same for all four of her pregnancies. Than cared and showed love for his family by teaching them to eat healthy and by making them dinner every night. While his family thought he could be a professional chef, Than would simply tilt his head to the side and give his off-to-the-side smile and say thank you, suggesting he was appreciative but did not believe the praise. Fiona adored her father’s cooking and would pass up a restaurant for a meal from her father. He never needed a recipe because he just knew what to add. The secret ingredient was love.
Love truly was Than’s gift to us all. He poured his love into everything, especially helping his kids. He took Maeve and Charlie to the pool to fine-tune their backstroke with an eye to All Stars. As a competitive swimmer in high school and at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Than loved to learn about technique. He was always intrigued when one of the kids taught him something new. Than and Finn loved to play video games together, and Than was always up for joining the kids’ games—whether it was playing hide and seek, teaching them card games, playing board games, and even helping to build Legos. All the kids, especially Finn, agree that Than gave the best hugs. He loved being with his kids, especially at mealtime. He had a whistle that could be heard across the neighborhood to call the kids whenever he needed them. He was always there for them to lend a helping hand. He was the dad that built the zip line, maintained the trampoline, and would stay until the amusement park closed, running from ride to ride, always ready for a roller coaster if that’s what the kids wanted. He was the dad who helped with their projects, homework, and especially math. He took such pride in their accomplishments and shared them with everyone.
Than was brilliant, curious, and loved to learn. He was adept at almost everything he did. And was never one to be underestimated. When Than was in high school, his guidance counselor said there was no point in applying to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. But Than did it anyway. Not only did he get in, he served for twenty years. He went on to receive the Coast Guard Unit Commendation Ribbon with Two Gold Stars, Coast Guard Meritorious Ribbon, CG Pistol Sharpshooter Ribbon, CG “E” Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, CG Special Operation Service Ribbon, and CG Presidential Unit Citation. He told all his children never to let anyone count them out and never give up on something they wanted to achieve.
Even though Than retired in 2017, he never lost his love of the Coast Guard and always made sure to have his hair cut short. But, if it got too long, he wore a baseball cap that showed his loyalties—The Dallas Cowboys, Porsche, Fire Island.
He was a dedicated patriot. He always stood and saluted the flag and proudly served his country. He said he chose the Coast Guard because he wanted to be a part of the service that protected people. He wanted to be a person who jumped in the water to save people. He never wanted to be in a position to take a life.
Than truly was a gentle soul, who loved animals and nature. He loved his cats and often wished he could be one so he could have permission to sit curled up in the sun all day. Than was humble and unassuming in all that he did. He loved comfort and wore his slippers at every opportunity, including out to the store if they were on his feet when he needed to run an errand. He loved the sun, the water, and road trips with his kids in his RV. He liked to take the long way—and could get there faster than anyone when he did. But no matter how fast he could drive or get the family to Long Island in record time, and no matter what, he always made time to stop and smell the roses. He taught us all to slow down and enjoy life.
He often expressed his love for Christine with roses, sending her one red rose every week when they were apart. He showed everyone in his family how to stop, slow down, and see the beauty in front of them. He was a soulful and prayerful person who believed Christine was his soulmate and that they were connected through all time and space and were brought together by God. He had a deep and abiding faith and spent hours talking about it with Christine and the children. He rarely missed a Sunday Mass, even before he converted to Catholicism in April 2022. He chose St. Patrick as his Patron saint, because Patrick was a convert too and because he had a deep love for Ireland that he found through marrying Christine. One of the greatest gifts he leaves his children is their love of God and family. He believed in a just and merciful God with whom one could find unconditional love and forgiveness and wanted his children to as well.
He loved music and the fact that he lived next door to WolfTrap National Park for the Performing Arts. He could walk to a show or listen from home. He loved going to concerts with Christine, the kids, as a family, or with friends. Long walks in the woods never ceased to be a joy for him. Till the day he died, he had a childlike wonder and wanted desperately to be well. He fought the good fight and was a brave warrior until the end. His greatest wish was to be a protector. He was always thinking of others and wanted to take care of people. He truly believed he was protecting and loving his wife and children right up to the end. And now he will protect them, watch over them, love them all the days of their life in the unconditional and loving arms of his Creator.
The mission of the United States Coast Guard is to serve the nation through selfless performance and to honor their duty to protect those they serve and serve with them. Than never abandoned his mission. He served us all selflessly, with honor, and protected everyone he loved, and he will do that forever. The Coast Guard motto is Semper Paratus. Always ready. Than was and will always be ready to protect and serve, with honor, integrity, loyalty, and love.
He was humble and selfless, and no one will ever be able to capture all that he was in this tribute. He was amazing. And we want to celebrate his life and love.

Nathaniel Remington Williams, quite a stately name. Thaniel is what family lovingly called him as we grew up. Nathaniel and Benjamin were reserved for stern, surprised or exasperated exclamations and remonstrances 🙂 After my departure to college, Thaniel transitioned naturally to Than for those close to him, but what do you call a sibling a few years junior to you? I proudly referred to him with anyone who might hear as my little brother. The first time I introduced him to a group of friends and acquaintances as a young adult there was a notable pause… “You may no longer refer to this individual as your ‘little brother’”. Standing before us, several inches taller and significantly broader across the shoulders, was my “younger brother”. I love you Thaniel. My heart breaks with you Christine, Fiona, Charlie, Maeve & Finn. We are with you forever. As was shared with me, no words suffice, but sending you all love and holding you in our hearts. I am so, so sorry.
God Bless You and Keep You My Friend!! Lots of Fond Memories From Our Time Together at The Factory!! I Will Cherish Them Forever!!
Honoring one of Americas heroes!! Rest In Peace My Brother, We Have The Watch!!!
Than’s smile was so infectious. He had a way to light up a room, to make us all feel better, smiley-er (if that might be a word), happier. I will cherish wonderful memories of him. RIP Than.
A memorial tree was planted in memory of the decedent.
Than, i will truly miss you my friend! I can honestly say i only have happy memories of you and will always consider you one of my most amazing friends. Every memory i have of you brings a big smile, a laugh and a few “what were we thinking” head shaking moments. We met through swimming when your family moved to NM and our instant bond was our painful but undying loyalty to the dallas cowboys! There are very few people you will meet in your lives that the second you meet them you know that they are an amazingly good person. Than was that person! I will forever miss you and cherish the memories we made. Christine, Than’s children, Than’s immediate family, extended family, and friends, please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers!
My son and I are so very sorry to read of your family’s and our community’s loss. The beautiful obituary that was written paints a wonderful portrait of Than. Please know that we feel our community and this world is a better place for having had him in it. I pray for Than, as well as your family. May you find peace and joy in your loving memories of this special man. Chris Betsold
Thaniel was my sweet and beautiful cousin. We had the chance to live in the same town growing up for several years. After freshman year at college I came home for the summer and was the diving coach at our neighborhood swim club. We were short on boys and I cajolled Thaniel to join. He was so sweet and brave and learned all the dives. Some of my fondest memories of him were of that summer at Merrimack Swim Club, a brown skinned, happy , pool rat, hitting me up for ice cream money, and playing cards at the front desk.
Than has positively touched many lives, including mine. He and his loving family received me in their home with open arms back in 2007. As an Au Pair for the family, I had the privilege to witness his unconditional love for life, cars, music, and most of all, his family. Than has always shown me so much kindness – he knew how much I loved Pearl Jam, and guess what? He and my dear Christine got me amazing tickets to see them live in DC. Yes, he was that kind of person. The person who cares about others and their well-being and wants to ensure they see their favorite band at least once in their lives:). His departure is sad, painful, and heartbreaking, but his love will remain alive forever in our hearts and through his children, who are a blessing from God. I often think of Than and Christine as my role model as parents – they are so loving and kind. You just have to spend a second with the Williams kids to know what I’m talking about. I love them all deeply! And will forever celebrate you, dear Than! I dedicate psalm 23 to you – may you be with the Lord, and may he comfort your family!
♥️
Christine, Fiona, Charlie, Maeve and Finn – I so enjoyed meeting all of you when you last visited Durango and was heartbroken to hear the news of your great sadness. But I hope you are holding each other tight, just as he’d have wanted you to, and sharing with each other every happy moment of fun and great joy – all the times when he was beaming at you with that amazing smile of his! I’ve been praying for all of you, especially because I love your grandparents and parents-in-law dearly! If it’s not too presumptuous coming from a priest you don’t really know, please trust that I will continue those prayers, and that I will be holding all of you in my heart as I celebrate the eucharist tomorrow. In some ineffable way, I believe that the eucharist is where we most share God’s heart, where Nathaniel is now safe and secure, and fully at peace, and I hope that it can become one of the places you most feel his continuing love and presence. With love from St. Mark’s, The Rev. Debbie Shew
With loving memories, Tiffany (Drumm) Richason and Family (Rob, Avery and Adrienne)
I am so sorry to hear of your loss.
Sadly, we have not seen ‘Thaniel for about 30 years (at Ben’s graduation from the AF Academy) but we have followed and admired his life, career and family progress. And we dearly love his parents. Janet is one of my favorite first cousins. Having lost a son at age 49 with two high school sons, we know much too well the pain his whole family is suffering. Much love from Glenn & Ruthie Selch
Our warmest condolences,
I’m so sorry to hear about Nathaniel’s passing. I’m so glad I grew up next to the Williams clan in Albuquerque and have many fond memories of our good times together. Nathaniel was a great guy. All of the Kvams send their condolences.

Christine, Fiona, Maeve, Charlie and Finn , We were so sorry to hear of Than’s passing. What a gentle and loving husband and father you were blessed to have in your lives. He had the most beautiful smile especially when he spoke of your mother and all of you! Mr Belford and I were given the honor of escorting your parents down the Brightwaters Canal to your Grammie and Pop’s house where there disembarked walked through a full Coast Guard Pergola of swords to arrive at their reception! It was the hottest day in Brightwaters that day!!! We celebrated them both for hours and then they went to Fire Island afterwards to continue the party. Over the years we have kept in touch through your grandparents and we have seen your family grow! We want you to know you are all in our prayers and your dad’s memory will remain in our hearts forever with love and kindness. We will miss his infectious smile. May the love of God which passes all understanding keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Amen.
I came across Than one time sitting outside St. Luke’s church. We took the time to shared personal stories with each other. I came away thinking what a sweet gentleman. It is a special memory for me. I pray that Christine and the children can find some comfort with their wonderful family memories.
RIP Thaniel.
A candle was lit for the decedent.
To our brother, our friend, and our classmate. You are an all-timer. With our love.
A candle was lit for the decedent.
One of the most naturally good-natured and funny people. Always fun to be around. We will miss you.
Christine and Than had an instant connection from the very beginning. I heard many stories about how great Than was before I had the pleasure of meeting him in person. He seemed almost too good to be true, but then I met him. Than was kind, funny, smart, handsome, and the perfect match for my dear friend Christine. I was lucky enough to visit them on Martha’s Vineyard just days after they became engaged to celebrate with them and a few other friends. It was obvious to all of us that they were truly in love with each other. That love continued to grow as their family did. It was impossible not to see the unconditional love Than had for Fiona, Charlie, Maeve, and Finn. Whether it was simply watching him interact with them or listening to him talk about them as he beamed with pride. Christine and his kids were the greatest loves of his life. Than did have another great love in his life though…the Dallas Cowboys. One would think this would make us less likely to get along as I am a Philadelphia Eagles fan, but it turns out it made us even better friends as our teams often suffered mutual fates. Than was a diehard fan…he braved the 700 level at Veteran’s Stadium to see his team play and then years later was able to enjoy a slightly less rambunctious atmosphere and much better seats at Lincoln Financial Field. I will miss the texts we shared while our teams played each other. I will continue to always think of Than first if I have an extra ticket when the Cowboys are in town. I am heartbroken that Than is no longer with us here on earth but know without a doubt that he is now our angel in Heaven. Christine, Fiona, Charlie, Maeve, and Finn, know that his love for you knows no boundaries, and your hearts will always be connected. I know my mom was there to greet him and they can learn the ropes of Heaven together. I love all of you and am so very sorry for your incredible loss.
My dear brother in law – although we have only spent a small amount of time in each other’s presence, you have always been in our hearts and homes wherever we are in the world. Logan will forever have the memory of her 14 year old self – you at our wedding; her observation: a doting husband and father. Fallyn has listened to stories of Uncle Than from Ben and Gramma and Dadpa all of her life and will continue to hear them and hold them close to her heart. I will never forget the night before I married Ben when you and I spent nearly 30 minutes trying remedies for the hiccups I had and you doing them with me – and the only remedy that worked was us laughing at how ridiculous we were being. Above all, you were kind to me that night, and I immediately felt calmed by your presence. You never felt like someone I had just met, who was about to become family – you felt like family from the beginning. I’ll always, always be grateful for that. Christine, Fiona, Charlie, Maeve, and Finn – I’m so sorry. There aren’t words big enough. We love you all.
I did not meet Nathaniel. I only had a business relationship with him. But talking to him on the phone, I got the impression he was a kind, compassionate and caring man. My prayers go out to his family.
We had the pleasure of meeting Than, Christine, and their family when they came to Ireland on holidays a few years past. We had such a great day showing them around the sights of Dublin and enjoying their company over a nice meal and a few drinks. We never saw a person smile as much as Than and enjoy the company of people. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all while you navigate through this difficult time. Love from Ireland, Chris, Donna, Kirsty & Chloe. Slán, Ádh mór agus suaimhneas síoraí
Strong hugs to you Christine, the children & all of Than’s family & close friends. May he Rest In Peace ? Than was a great shipmate…Tony & I always enjoyed his company when we all lived in Bayridge. Some fun nights were dinner & cards at our apt and Jeopardy at O’Sullivans.
