Nicolo Vittorio "Nico" Gaskell
March 23, 1980 ~ March 14, 2022
Nicolo “Nico” Vittorio Gaskell, a young man of 41, passed away on the morning of March 14, 2022. He was born on March 23, 1980 in the Philippines and moved to the United States when he was 4 years old. He was a proud student of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic School, Gonzaga High School, and University of Scranton. Nico demonstrated a fullness of life, which quickly earned him the respect and love of all who interacted with him. His close friends and family spoke often about his ability to light up a room with his smile. His passions included cooking, food and wine, hip-hop and The Beatles, a lifelong commitment to Washington sports (which he insisted proved he was never a bandwagon fan), and his loved ones, including his cats. For most of his adult life, he worked as a part of the restaurant community in the greater DC area. In this work, he demonstrated a commitment to his team, his guests, and his craft. He never took life too seriously, but showed up with purpose in all that he did and showed up consistently for those who needed him.
Nico began to show symptoms of illness in January 2021. His health journey progressed for the next 15 months, throughout which he showed his strength of character through his ever present concern for the well being of his loved ones even over his own. In the end he succumbed to pancreatic cancer.
He is survived by his fiancé, Anna Sommerfeldt; his mother and father, Luisa and Manuel Gaskell; his brothers, Javier (Claire and their children Jackson, Chase, and Simone), and Christian; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
His family will receive friends on Sunday, March 20th from 3-6pm at Money and King Funeral Home in Vienna, VA.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, March 21st at 11am at St. Mark Catholic Church (9970 Vale Rd. Vienna, VA) with a reception to follow.
Flowers cannot be placed in the church, in recognition of Lent. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donated to a charity in Nico’s honor, specifically:
