Norman A. Mayo

Captain Norman A. Mayo, USN (retired), of Ashburn, Virginia, aged 87, passed away August 9, 2025. He was the first son of Alfred and Charlotte Mayo and grew up in South Berwick, Maine. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ruth, his son and daughter-in-law, Al and Ruth Mayo, his daughter Kathy Mayo, his son-in-law Nick Rehman, and his brother Dave Mayo. In addition, he leaves behind his granddaughters Christina and Emma Mayo, grandsons Bilal Rehman and his wife Noor, and Ashaz Rehman, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter Debbie, and his brothers Dick and Don.
Norm was raised in South Berwick, Maine, and attended the United States Naval Academy, graduating as a member of the Class of 1959. He served in the United States Navy for twenty-six years. He was stationed in Newport, RI; Annapolis, MD; Norfolk, VA; the Naval Post Graduate School, Monterey, CA; the Pentagon; as Executive officer of the U.S.S. Lang in Long Beach, CA;, assigned to Destroyer Squadron 35 in Pearl Harbor, HI as assistant to the Commodore; the Pentagon again, in the office of the Secretary of Energy; and as CO of the U.S.S. Harold E. Holt, which took part in the Independence Day ceremonies for the Solomon Islands, where the Holt hosted Senator John Glenn and Mrs. Glenn; and finally at the Pentagon once again. After retiring from the Navy, he continued working in the Washington, D.C, area.
He was a 33° Mason, an active member of the Scottish Rite, and a member of Concord Lodge in Vienna, VA. He served as Associate Grand Marshal in 2007-2008, and as District Deputy Grand Master in 2004-2005. He also was an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star with Harmony Chapter, Vienna, VA, serving as Worthy Patron three times 1993-1994, 2003-2004, and 2017-2018), and serving as Marshal for innumerable years.
A Masonic funeral service and an Eastern Star funeral service will both be held during a Memorial service to be held Saturday, Sept. 13, 2025, at Money and King Funeral Home in Vienna, VA. Visiting will begin at 10 a.m., followed by a memorial service to celebrate his life at 11 a.m.
A military funeral at Arlington National Cemetery will be held at a date and time to be announced later.
