In Loving Memory

Paul Dung Kim Phung

December 7, 1947 – January 5, 2024

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Paul Dung Kim Phung who died at Fair Oaks Hospital on January 5, 2024. Paul passed away peacefully at the age of 76 surrounded by his wife, children, brother, and extended family members. He was loved and cared for by his family until the very end.

Paul will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 47 years, Jane Greubel Phung. He was the beloved father to Jennifer and Jessica Phung, brother to Dominic Phung (Aline), John Phung (Thuy), Phuong Phung (Vinh), and uncle to eight nieces & nephews who will forever cherish the memories shared with him.

Paul was the second eldest of five children born to Trong Phung and Huynh Thi Hue. He was born and raised in Saigon, Vietnam. In 1967, Paul joined the Vietnam Armed Forces (VAF) as a Staff Sergeant and worked as an interpreter for an American unit in Danang, VN. In 1968, he was wounded in combat and spent a year recuperating in a military hospital in Danang. From 1970-1974, he relocated to Indianapolis, IN to continue his education at Marian College (aka Marian University) and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. In 1975, Paul moved to Virginia to be closer to his parents and siblings who also immigrated to the United States. In 1976, he married his college sweetheart (Jane Greubel Phung) in her hometown of Fort Branch, IN and they settled in Arlington, VA. Paul became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1981.

His 45-year career as an accountant was marked by respect and a dedication to his colleagues. He embraced the simple pleasures of life – a morning cup of Folgers coffee, playing solitaire, and cooking his renowned BBQ pork ribs (made from his secret recipe) that brought joy to friends and family. He will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, resilience, and the lasting impact he had on the lives of those fortunate enough to have known him.
