Richard (Dick) Eimas of Reston, VA, died at his home on Thursday, November 19, 2020, surrounded by loved ones, following a nearly two-year battle with cancer. He was 82 years young.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Joan, his children, Susan and Christopher (Necolle), and his grandchildren, Alaina and Colton. Also surviving is his sister, Jean Sinchak of Sun City West, Arizona.

Dick was born in Portsmouth, OH on May 14, 1938, to Marcus and Evelyn (née Hosafros) Eimas. He spent his early childhood moving around the U.S. while his father served in the Army during World War II, settling in Denver, CO. He graduated from East High School in 1956 and the University of Colorado in 1960.

Dick joined the Naval Reserve while still in high school. Upon graduating from college, he entered Officer Candidate School. He was commissioned an officer and began active duty, serving with the Naval Security Group. In 1964, he rejoined the Naval Reserve, where he continued to serve until retiring in 1987 with the rank of Commander, having served 32 years. He was awarded the USNSG Meritorious Service Award.

Following active duty, Dick attended graduate school at the University of Denver. It was here he met his future wife, and partner, Joan - also a graduate student. He graduated in 1965 with a Master of Arts in Library Science. Dick became a librarian with an interest in medical libraries, beginning at the National Institutes of Health. He moved on to the University of Kentucky, Vanderbilt University, Medical College of Wisconsin, finding a home at the University of Iowa. He served as the Curator of the John Martin History of Medicine Collection in the Hardin Library for the Health Sciences for nearly 30 years, retiring in 2002. While Curator, Dick compiled and edited Heirs of Hippocrates: The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books published in 1990.

In 1976, Dick began another career as a tax preparer for H & R Block. He continued working with taxes for more than 40 years, becoming an Enrolled Agent. He stopped working in March 2020 because of the pandemic.

Bicycling was one of Dick’s favorite activities. He spent many happy afternoons cycling the Iowa countryside, alone or with his children. He continued bicycling after retiring to Virginia, where he participated in the Virginia Senior Olympics and earned several medals. He retired his favorite bike having ridden over 30,000 miles on it.

Dick also enjoyed involvement with a varied number of organizations, too many to list. He was a member of MOAA and AUSN, The American Osler Society, and the Virginia Society of Enrolled Agents. 1. Dick was a treasured friend and member of the Board of Directors of the Northern Virginia Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America. He will always be remembered for his friendly optimism and sense of humor. Dick, we miss you already. Rest in peace.

    • Dick Eismas was a gentle and kind soul. I shall miss him. During the 10-20 years I knew him in VSEA and in the Northern Virginia chapter, he was always helpful and encouraging to members of the chapter. He always welcomed guests and newcomers to the Chapter. Rest in peace, dear friend. Anne Uno, EA, CFP, and colleague.

  2. Our deepest sympathy to Dick’s family and friends. We did not know him well, but just being in his presence was calming and one knew one was enveloped in gentleness. We are so fortunate to have experienced his peaceful nature. Larry & Rosemary Fahl from VaSEA

  3. We knew Dick Eimas through VA Society of Enrolled Agents – he was a gentlemen, very personable, and pleasure to know. Our thoughts are with family.

  4. I had the honor to work with Dick when I began working at Hardin Library in 1985. I recall Dick as someone who was fair but also called a spade a spade and I admired him for that honesty. We had a lot of good times at Hardin Library and I have fond memories not only of Dick but I also worked with Susan. Please accept my condolences in your loss of a very special man. Deanna (Redlinger) Poe

  5. Dick and I were both cyclists and, during the many times we were together at an Enrolled Agent seminar, or board meeting, we always shared our latest cycling “conquest”. “How many miles have you done this summer?” one of us would ask the other, and, with that, we’d take of reminiscing of our recent adventures. I remember Dick telling me of a recent race or of when he broke his collar bone on a training ride.Of course, we also shared stories of recent client happenings and laughed heartily about some the funny things that happen during the tax season. Dick’s leadership, tenacity, and friendship will be sorely missed! God bless him!!

  6. We’re so very sorry to learn of Dick’s passing. We send our sincere condolences to you all. We have happy memories of times with you at Trinity when our girls were young. Joanne, Doug, and Ingrid Madsen

  7. Dick raised me as a Master Mason in Iowa City Lodge #4 when he was Worshipful Master many years ago. Also, we both were fraternity brothers in Acacia. Almighty God, we thanked Thee for the life and ministry of this good man, our friend; the law of kindness was on his tongue. Rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer, given to hos- pitality; having fought the good fight, and finished the course, and kept the faith, grant to him the crown of righteousness that fadeth not away. Amen! Requiescat In Pace, Geoff Hammond

  8. My deepest sympathy goes out to Joan and all of Dick’s family. When Dick had to stop working due to Covid concerns back in March, I missed his cheerful presence at the office and fully expected he’d be back in the saddle before too long. I’m sad that things didn’t work out that way but this is 2020. I know you all have wonderful memories of Dick to look back on. I will remember him as kind, pleasant, friendly and always willing to help out when asked. Jane Dowler

  9. In memory and honor of CDR Richard Eimas, USN(Ret), a shipmate and active member of the LT Kenyon Anderson Chapter of the Association of the USN.

  10. I worked with Dick in the building where H&R Block had their offices. In 2018 when the solar eclipse occurred the building management office had a viewing party. We gave out viewing glasses and moon pies. Dick came over and told me how in his early childhood days you couldn’t eat a moon pie without drinking an RC Cola. A few days later he brought me one, and we vowed to eat our moon pies and RC Colas together. Dick would always come by my office to just “check in” and say hello, invite me over to the office for lunch or to just share a funny little antedote with me. He was such a kind and funny person and I am so glad to have known him. He will be missed!

  11. My husband and I sang in the St. Anne’s choir for many years along side Dick, Joan and for awhile, Susan. It was a wonderful experience. I even enjoyed rehearsing, although I admit they were much better singers than I was. Mike turned to Dick years later to handle a complex tax trust we administered. He was always helpful, friendly and a joy to be with, and I’m sure he’ll be missed by his family and many friends.

  12. Condolences to Joan and your family on the loss of such a kind, funny, wonderful man. –Laura Julier,, former Trinity member
