Richard S. Hammett
October 26, 1926 ~ November 19, 2010
Richard S. Hammett began a new journey on November 19, 2010. His home was New York City but being the child of a Theater manager, he began his life on the road in Boston, Massachusetts, living out of dresser drawers. As a child in New York he had numerous jobs at the Lyceum Theater, the oldest continuously operating legitimate theater on Broadway. After serving in World War II he became an agent with William Morris Agency in New York City. He loved to tell stories about Judy Garland, Don Ameche, Danny Kay, June Allyson, Vivian Lee and Laurence Olivier. He had a true love of the Theater.
In the 1950’s he relocated to Arlington, Virginia for a new chapter of his life. He went into Custom home and commercial building as well as sales. He brought the Darby Real Estate Company from Connecticut to Virginia; he also worked for Atlas and Town and Country and began Flag Reality and Rugby Development in the 1980’s. He also served on the Democratic National Committee in Arlington and for those that know him in his later years he repented and became a staunch conservative. He remained in Northern Virginia but traveled all over the world. He had a passion for politics and discussing economic and world affairs. He will be remembered for his laughter, humor, and twinkle in his eye. He is survived by wonderful family and friends. He truly loved life and said in the last month “I am having too much fun to leave.”

What will we do without our wonderful friend to golf, dine and converse with about old and new issues? Our condolences to your family but they know that you’re still with us in spirit. Eternal rest until we meet again.
What does one say about Dick? An unconditional friend, a mentor, a giver. I am so sorry, so sad. Dick was on my mind, and memory, more than he might ever have known, but always with a smile and a thank you. My deep condolences to his family and friends, he was a “keeper” and his fun, advice and friendship is going to always be a keeper in our hearts.
What a great guy to be around! Dick knew how to have fun and enjoy himself. He had a sharp wit and agile mind. Fairways and Greens my friend.
I first met Dick on the golf course at CNG&CC. The stories he could tell . . . Wow. He will be missed. Unfortunately, I am out of town and unable to pay my respects in person, however, please be assured of my thoughts.
Thank you for being such a great and inspiring Real Estate Manager! I really enjoyed the years in your office. You were always there to give us good advice and to create a pleasant atmosphere. it was fun to go to the office every day! Then, we all retired, lived far away but kept in touch with the funniest e-mails ever. Thank you for everything Dick! So sorry I could not attend the service. My sincere condoleances to the family. Marie-Claire Steinberg
Dick was my sister Dona Platenberg’s best friend and companion of almost 40 years. My airport chauffeur, always gracious and kind to me, loyal and devoted to Dona and her family. A great loss and my thoughts are with you.
I found this on the net. I knew Dick for many years, and know some of the names posted here. I regret to say that Dona Platenberg just passed away. Dona and I always shared the horror of Dick’s bad driving. Besides changing lanes without looking, he hit the gas every 5 seconds or so. Drove us crazy. I guess they both can have dinner now with Marlene Detrich ! Dick was my friend for many years. Just remembered when he bought that diesel Mercedes. He loved that car, but it sounded like a semi; but he couldn’t care. In closing, I still here in my mind when he called on the phone : “ Looooooooooooo, Dick Hammettâ€. I still miss him. Thanks to whoever funded the book. Lou Gatti
