Richard Stephen Nemeth

Colonel Richard Stephen Nemeth (USAF, retired), took his final flight on September 19, 2016. He passed away peacefully at home following a long, courageous battle with prostate cancer. He was 84. The son of Stephen W. and Frances Lang Nemeth, Dick was born in Bridgeport, CT. and raised in Fairfield. He graduated from Roger Ludlow High School where he was a class president, captain of the football team and a member of the Thespian Society. Dick was a proud member of the Class of 1953, Union College in Schenectady, NY. At Union College he continued his football career as a quarterback, was a member of the Kappa Alpha Society and on the R.O.T.C Senior board. He later received an MBA from George Washington University in Washington, DC.
Following his graduation from Union College, Dick was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the United States Air Force. He enjoyed a 30 year career as a pilot and an administrator, serving in Spain, Okinawa, Viet Nam, Germany and numerous stateside locations. He finished his Air Force career as a faculty member of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in Washington, DC. His awards included the Defense Superior Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, and Air Medal. Dick was a true patriot and loved serving his country.
Throughout his life Dick was devoted husband, son, father, grandfather, uncle and friend to all. He was very proud of his Hungarian heritage. in retirement, Dick enjoyed serving as a Docent at the Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum and serving as a Red Cross volunteer at Walter Reed National Military Center at Bethesda. He loved history, traveling, sailing, hiking and a good party, as well as off key singing of obscure songs. He will be greatly missed.
Dick is survived by his wife of 60 years, Helen Butler Nemeth; a son, Gregory S. Nemeth of Fredericksburg, VA; a daughter, Claudia Nemeth Groh, (Randall), of Ellicott City, MD and five grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the staff at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center at Bethesda and the National Institutes of Health who so lovingly and professionally cared for Dick, as well as Hospice and the care givers who were with him at home until his death.

I met Richard when we attended my Grandson’s wedding Phillip to Sarah Richard’s Granddaughter. I had nothing but admiration for this gentleman and I will never forget him.
