Robert Alfred Johnson, known to family and friends as Bob, passed away on September 3, 2026, in Reston, Virginia, at the age of 83, after a long battle with dementia following a stroke in 2021. Born on March 17, 1943, in Norfolk, Virginia to parents Earl Johnson and Verona Gauche, he lived a life marked by service, curiosity, kindness, and a deep devotion to the people he loved.

Bob was the beloved husband of Christine Johnson and a devoted father to his son, Bayard Johnson, and his daughter, Nina Clements. His generosity extended far beyond his immediate household. For his sisters, nieces, nephews, and extended family, no request was ever an imposition. He was the person everyone knew they could count on, without hesitation. Those who knew him best will remember his positive and energetic presence, thoughtful nature, and the genuine interest he took in the lives of others. He was a man who made people feel welcome, and he had a remarkable gift for turning complete strangers into friends.

Growing up in Jacksonville, Florida, alongside his sisters Sherryl and Gail, Bob pursued his education at Stetson University in DeLand, Florida, as well as completing some graduate work at the University of Florida. His participation in the ROTC led to his service as a Captain in the Army during the Vietnam War, carrying the responsibilities of military service with honor and resolve. His time in uniform reflected the same qualities that guided his life afterward, including loyalty, courage, and integrity.

Following his military service and building upon his love of the sciences and public service, Bob built a distinguished career as a geographer with the United States Geological Survey at their headquarters in Reston, Virginia, where he made his family home with Christine Hedrick Johnson. In his work at the USGS Earth Science Information Center, he applied his intelligence and diligence to a field that required both precision and perspective, and educated the American public about their dynamic world using his extraordinary interpersonal skills. He was respected for his knowledge and his dependable manner, and he contributed meaningfully to the important work of understanding and documenting the world around him. His career reflected not only his professional ability but also his enduring curiosity and enthusiasm about the places and landscapes that shape human life.

Bob was widely admired for his friendliness, intelligence, and generosity. Relatives remember his hospitality, intelligence, vivacity, and altruism. He was the kind of person who remembered names, asked questions, and listened with sincere attention and interest. Bob enjoyed befriending anyone he met, and he brought that same openness and warmth into every part of his life. His generosity was not limited to material things, but was shown in his time, encouragement, and willingness to be present for others.

Bob especially cherished time with his family, and one of his greatest joys was planning vacations that allowed everyone to be together. These trips were opportunities to create memories, connect with others, and better understand history, art, culture, and the world. He understood the value of time well spent, and he made it a priority to create experiences that would be remembered long after the journey ended.

Bob will be remembered with love and gratitude by those who knew him. His life was one of service, patriotism, education, and kindness, and his legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the colleagues who respected him, the friends he made, and the many lives he touched through his example. The memory of his friendly demeanor, intelligent and curious mind, and generous spirit will remain a lasting comfort to all who mourn his passing.
