Robert Edward Haverkamp
July 17, 1935 ~ November 8, 2016
Robert (Bob) Edward Haverkamp, 81 of Vienna, Virginia died on November 8, 2016 at The Jefferson, Arlington, Virginia from complications of frontotemporal dementia. He was a quiet man of formidable intellect and unwavering loyalty to his loved ones.
Born July 17th, 1935 in Chicago, Bob grew up in Skokie, IL with his parents Edward and Elizabeth (Dipong) and younger brother Albert. When he was in his early teens, Bob's family purchased a 30-acre farm in Warrenville, IL. There they grew prize winning sweet corn, hardy rhubarb, and great pumpkins for neighbors and friends. The boys had a horse named Trigger who died tragically in a barn fire; they hunted rabbits and tin cans. Bob attended high school at Campion Jesuit boarding school in Wisconsin. Next he studied English at the University of Notre Dame on an ROTC scholarship. Later, Bob served in the United States Marine Corps as a Lieutenant, and earned a graduate degree from the University of Chicago. He had a love of letters and historical minutia. For amusement he could recite "The Cremation of Sam McGee" and compare the reigns of Charles the Fat and Chilperic II.
In 1963 Bob married Kay Kostal and the couple had three daughters Sue, Beth, and Laura.
Bob and Kay settled in Wheaton and Geneva, IL both stops on the Chicago Northwestern line. Bob commuted to his career at the United States Department of Labor. He taught CCD, refereed soccer, and took his daughters to the library regularly. Later he and the family relocated to New England where Bob worked in the Boston office of the DOL. Bob was an avid softball player, responsible for awarding office teammates with wry and obtuse laurels for feats and fracases on the field. Next he moved to Northern Virginia where Bob retired from the Department of Labor in Washington D.C. He golfed regularly but erratically at Stoneleigh Golf Club in Round Hill, VA. His wife Kay died in 1999.
Joyfully, Bob married his second wife Margaret Mary (Marty) Talbot in 2001. The couple lived in Vienna, VA and took pleasure reading, antiquing, and summering at Marty's lake house in Rhinelander, WI.
Bob Haverkamp is survived by his wife Marty, his brother Albert, his daughter Karen Susan Haverkamp and her husband Conrad Epting, his daughter Beth Carol Haverkamp Powers and her husband Mike Powers, and his daughter Laura Jeanne Haverkamp, and four grandchildren. He also has six step children and many step grandchildren.

Bob was a true gentleman. Soft spoken and light hearted, he never seemed to be bothered by anything. If a person had a problem with Bob, that person would have a problem with anyone. Many good Stoneleigh memories. RIP.
