A resident of Vienna, VA since 1969 and a retired Army colonel, Robert Francis Hallahan died at his home on April 27, 2015 surrounded by his loving family.
Col. Hallahan was born in Johnstown, PA on August 4, 1925. He graduated from Xavier High School, Brooklyn, New York and enlisted in the Army at age 17. He was commissioned in the field artillery upon graduation from the United States Military Academy in 1948. He was also a graduate of the Naval War College, the Army War College and George Washington University holding masters degrees in International Affairs and Personnel Administration. He served in Korea and saw continuous action in six campaigns detailed in his memoir, All Good Men, published in 2003. He commanded the Heavy Mortar Battery of the 502 Airborne Infantry in Germany, served as a Tactical Officer at West Point pioneering field training for cadets with combat units in Europe and the US. He was on the staff of the Commander-in-Chief Atlantic during the Dominican Republic crisis and directed the Southeast Asia Branch of the Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff during the final years of the Vietnam War. His awards include the Bronze Star for Valor, the Legion of Merit, the Purple Heart, the Joint Services Commendation Medal, and the Senior Parachutist Badge. He was an active member of the West Point Association of Graduates, Korean War Veterans, 52nd Field Artillery Association and Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church. His greatest joys in life were beach vacations and holiday gatherings with his large family of children, sons- and daughters-in law and many grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 64 years, Phyllis Ann Slattery Hallahan. Survivors include his sister Sally Buckley, his daughters Ann Marie Peters (Ken), Kathleen Zeifang, Louise Stakelin (Bill), Mary Kushan (Jeff) and his sons Robert F. Hallahan III (Joann) and John S. Hallahan (Lisa), 15 grandchildren, one great granddaughter and his dear friend and caretaker, Gershon Bundu.
Visitation will be held at Money and King Funeral Home from 6 to 8 PM on Friday, May 1. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, May 2 at 1:30 PM at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Vienna. Internment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
