Robert Harris Oakley, 73, of Vienna, Virginia, passed away on Tuesday, July 28, 2026. He was born on February 21, 1953, in Memphis, Tennessee, to William Robert Oakley and Virginia Harris Oakley.
Robert is survived by his loving wife Meg Oakley and his beloved children, Christopher Oakley and Kathleen Oakley. He is also survived by his brother, Jared Oakley (Kim Oakley) of Upland, California, and nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Robert was an English major at Mississippi State University and holds a Masters in English from the University of Illinois as well as a JD from Georgetown Law.
Robert’s greatest joy was his family. He was a devoted father to Christopher and Kathleen, and a wonderful husband and partner for Meg. Special memories include his unwavering support for his children’s artistic and athletic pursuits, family vacations at the beach, and relaxing family time at home.
Robert was a passionate reader; the breadth and depth of his reading was seemingly unmatched by anyone else. Robert’s never-ending intellectual curiosity and erudite sense of humor inspired his close friends. He was an avid photographer with a keen interest in landscape photography, traveling in the US and Europe to capture new and dramatic landscapes. He deeply loved music in all its varieties and had a special interest in jazz, the Beatles, and Bob Dylan.
Robert was an attorney with the Environment Division of the Department of Justice for 33 years before retiring in 2019. Through his cases, he worked tirelessly to improve air and water quality for all Americans as well as to protect endangered species.
Robert loved living in the quiet and friendly Shouse Village community. He volunteered with the swim team for many years and was a regular player with the Shouse bridge club. He enjoyed walking through the neighborhood and woods, often with his camera to photograph the changing seasons.
Robert will be dearly missed, but never forgotten, by his family and friends. A celebration of his life will follow at a later date.
