Robert Lee Dugan
November 22, 1941 – December 24, 2025
Robert Lee Dugan, native son of Northern Virginia, passed on Christmas Eve, 2025, aged 84. He leaves his loving and devoted wife, Joyce Vernon Dugan, and sons Brian and Randolph from his previous marriage to Linda. He is preceded by his storied parents, Daniel Arthur Dugan, former Chairman of the Arlington County Board, and the beautiful Jeanne, née Caponi.
Bob loved dogs, kids, hunting, fishing, whiskey, oysters, Italian food, playing guitar, his friends, his students, and horses. He was athletic, intelligent, curious, and charismatic. Bob was co-captain of the Collegiate High School football team, a state champion skeet shooter, a winning drag racer, a fearless parachutist who made over one hundred jumps, and an enthusiastic foxhunter. He was happiest when teaching dressage, laughing with friends and loved ones, or working with his hands at the many hobbies that captivated him.
The family thanks the staff of Sunrise Senior Living, Hunter Mill for their thoughtful care, and the waitresses of the Vienna Inn for their kindness. In lieu of flowers, please spend some time outdoors, if you can, and think of him.

I will always remember my adored “Big” Cousin Bobby? He was tall, slim and very handsome and a hero to me as a little girl of five because he was tall enough to lift me up to touch the ceiling with my head, a huge thrill! He had a wicked sense of humor and was totally fearless whether he was jumping from a plane, jumping on the back of a big horse or the front of a motorcycle or driving his mother’s 1958 Jaguar XK140 on Interstate 495 one night before it was actually open. He wanted to see if he could actually get going that fast. I don’t remember if he did, but it was the fastest that I’ve ever gone in a car. He also put me up on the tallest horse I’d ever been on, and I survived that, too. As I’m writing this, I’m remembering so many other escapades we shared.
I was heartbroken to learn that Bob was in the throes of Alzheimer’s Disease and that he probably wouldn’t remember me, but I like to think the he may have had some recognition when he saw some photos I sent of our family and that maybe he smiled
Bill and I are sending our most sincere sympathy to Joyce, Brian and Randy and those who knew and loved Robert Lee Dugan.
