Roland Smith Jr.
August 20, 1956 ~ September 15, 2015
In loving memory of...
Elder Roland Hayes Smith Jr
Roland Hayes Smith, Jr was born on August 20, 1956 to Roland Sr and Shirley Smith. He grew up in Northeast Washington DC with his parents and three siblings, Sharon, Michael, and Deborah (deceased). He always thrived on the belief of taking care of his family and when he started a family with his wife, Diane, he was determined to persevere and provide a strong, stable Christian home for them.
Elder Roland devoted his life to his family and to ministry. He studied at night and obtained his degree and several certifications for both IT and Ministry. He began his call to ministry as a deacon at Community Baptist Church and then united with Upper Room Christian Cathedral, where he continued his call and became a minister. Furthering that call, he elevated to an Elder, where he oversaw various ministries and touched many lives.
On September 15, 2015 at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Elder Roland, at age 59, went on to be with the Lord. His memory is continued on through his wife, Diane, his children, Roland Hayes Smith III (Allyssa), LaKisha McBryde (Edward), Tiffany Graham Snead (Corey), and Michelle Smith Biggs (Xavier), six grandchildren, as well as a host family and many loved ones.

Sister Diane and family, I’m so very, very sorry to hear about the passing of Elder Roland. Indeed I am shocked, especially when just seeing him a couple of weeks ago at Word Alive. And what a wonderful conversation the three of us had that evening. I can certainly identify with your grief, but still, I cannot feel the pain that you are experiencing at this time. As Romans 8:18 states, “For we know that the sufferings of the present time cannot be compared to the Glory that shall be revealed in us.” Roland is shouting the victory! Roland pressed his way in ministry. I am so happy that Elder Furbush gave Roland the ‘Charge’ in ministry at the house right before he became ill. After Elder Furbush passed, Roland was disappointed that he did not receive a certificate of ‘Charge’ from Elder Furbush. As God would have it, I had designed a Certificate of Charge for Elder Furbush the he gave to all the ministers he charged in ministry. Ironically, I had Elder Furbush’s signature saved electronically. I was able to print the certificate with Elder Furbush’s signature and the date of the ‘Charge’ given to Minister Roland. He was ecstatic and said the certificate would hang in his study. Although shocking, but as Bishop Cherry just preached a week ago, that there is a time to be Born, a time to Live and a time to Die. It is so wonderful to know that Brother Roland fought the good fight, he finished his course, he kept the faith. Now there awaits for him a Crown of Righteousness which the Lord God, the Righteous Judge shall give Roland in that great day. I thank God for the last conversation we had. I will be in prayer for you Diane as God carry you through your season and your loss. We both now share much together. Love, Sister Marilyn Furbush
