Sally D. Liff

Sally Diane Liff, 79, a longtime McLean resident, passed away April 20.

Born in Boulder, Colo., Ms. Liff in 1955 graduated cum laude in economics from the University of Colorado Boulder, having won the Val B. Fischer scholarship award in 1954. She received her master's degree in transportation planning from Northwestern Transportation Center in Evanston, Ill., in 1970.

Ms. Liff worked in various capacities for Voorhees Associates, Dames & Moore, Bellomo & Magee, the Transportation Research Board, and the Academy of Sciences. She also was a member of the American Planning Association, the Women's Transportation Seminar, the Institute of Transportation Engineers, the Committee of Transportation and Air Quality of TRB.

She was active in many community and area organizations, including chairing the Fairfax County Tenant-Landlord Commission, and was a docent for the Kennedy Center, the Building Museum, and the Supreme Court, all in Washington, D.C. Ms. Liff was honored by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts for 40 years of service, having given tours since its inception. She also ushered at Wolf Trap and participated in the local chapter of American Association of University Women (AAUW). Ms. Liff was a longtime member of First Church of Christ, Scientist, McLean, Virginia.

A celebration of her life will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. Friday, May 10, with a reception following at Westwood Country Club in Vienna, Va.

Donations in her honor may be made to the National Kennedy Center, National Building Museum, or Christian Science Church of McLean.

  3. Sally was a force to behold, big ideas and energy in a small package. She was actively engaged in her community and also in the DC Area Phi Beta Kappa Association. We will miss her.
