Shirley Jenkins Herold
November 13, 1932 ~ October 8, 2018
Shirley Jenkins Herold of Fairfax, Virginia passed away peacefully on Monday, October 8th, 2018. She was 85. Shirley was a strong, stubborn West Virginia woman with a contagious smile. She was especially proud of her birthplace, Grafton, the city that founded Mother's Day in 1908. She leaves behind a legacy of loving and supporting her family. She loved those close to her with all her heart and is remembered as a devoted wife and loving mother. Her wit and outspoken way of expressing herself was as unique as she was.
While Shirley worked for The Bureau of National Affairs, Inc. in Gaithersburg, MD for over 25 years, she always felt that her greatest accomplishment was raising a family of boys. There is no doubt, she was put on this earth to be a mother, the best mother ever, of three sons. An affectionate mother, she devoted herself to helping her boys in every possible way. She never missed a game, made sure their uniforms were clean, looked after them when they were sick and kept them well fed.
She was a loving grandmother, mother, daughter and wife who loved nothing more than big hugs and seeing pictures of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Among her favorite poems was “When I Am an Old Woman, I Shall Wear Purple.” Her favorite song was John Denver’s “Country Roads, Almost Heaven West Virginia” but she loved anything by Frank Sinatra or Tom Jones.
She will be dearly missed by her sons, James E. Quinn III, Kevin B. Quinn, and Spencer R. Quinn and their wives, Linda, Lynn and Jo-Anne, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will also be missed by the six children of her late husband Charles Herold – Carolyn Faraday, Jim Herold, Rita Gregorits, Charles “Buck” Herold, Tom Herold and Jack Herold — and extended family.
Shirley asked that her ashes be scattered in West Virginia at a family memorial service, to be held in the near future.
