Sophia Austin

On Friday afternoon, September 19, 2014, Sophia passed away peacefully in her sleep with her husband by her side. She had been under hospice care at home in Vienna, Va. She was 78 years old. Cause of death was bladder cancer. She was born in Romania in 1936 and lived there during the Nazi and Russian occupations of World War II. The family moved to Greece in 1947 and she finished her secondary education in Greece. She married a Marine Guard at the American Embassy in Athens and moved to the United States in 1959. Her first marriage ended in divorce. She worked for many years as a retail sales associate for Woodward and Lothrop at the Tysons Corner store. She was a gourmet cook, known for her holiday celebration dinners and lavish desserts. She traveled extensively in the US and overseas and in more recent years enjoyed working crossword puzzles and playing card games. She was predeceased by her parents, George snd Irene Ioannou and brother, Saba. She is survived by her husband of 32 years, Oakley; a sister, three daughters, one grandson and three great-grandchildren; three step-children and nine step-grandchildren. A celebration of Her Life will be held at a future date yet to be determined. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her name to Capital Caring Hospice or a charity of your choice.
