Stephen Cornell Smore Jr

Stephen (Steve) Cornell Smore, Jr., 89, of Vienna, VA, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family and devoted hospice caregivers, following an 18-month journey through a series of serious health challenges.
Steve was born on April 25, 1937 to Stephen Cornell Smore and Martha V. Smore in Uniontown, PA. He graduated from Uniontown High School in 1955, where he was recognized as an outstanding artist, receiving numerous awards for his works. He maintained fond memories of his hometown throughout his life.
After graduation, Steve began his career using his artistic talents as a window dresser for Kaufmann’s Department Store and a label designer for Anchor Hocking before serving four years in the United States Air Force. After graduating first in his class, he was selected to serve as a Technical Instructor, training Air Force personnel in aircraft refueling operations, bulk fuel receipt and storage, laboratory fuel testing, and explosives safety.
Upon discharge from military service, Steve moved to Washington, DC to embark on a 31-year career in cartography with the Army Map Service (Defense Mapping Agency) working on high-profile projects contributing to mapping that supported NASA’s Apollo lunar landing missions. While his professional work required extraordinary precision, Steve never lost his love for art. Throughout his career, he delighted coworkers by creating personalized caricature cards and cartoons for birthdays, retirements, and special occasions.
In 1962, Steve met Mary Ann Rabatin. They married in 1964 and built a loving life together, raising two “kiddos”, Cheryl Marie (Smore) Monahan and Stephen Cornell Smore III.
After retiring in 1993, Steve devoted his time to doting on Mary Ann and pursuing the many interests that brought him joy. He attended art classes, enjoyed model railroading, explored his love of history through reading and visits to American battlefields, and continued painting in a variety of media, including family portraits and landscapes. His most special passion, however, was wood carving—creating extraordinarily detailed birds and ducks that reflected both his artistic talent and meticulous attention to detail.
In 1997, Steve became the beloved “Pappy” to Erin and later Alison (“Ali”) Monahan, whom he affectionately called the “Dynamite Sisters.” He was endlessly proud of them and cherished every moment they shared.
Steve will be remembered for his remarkable artistic talent, exceptional organizational skills, and trademark sarcastic sense of humor. Above all, he will be remembered for the deep love he had for his family. His creativity, generosity, and unique spirit left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Steve was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Ann Smore, and his brother, Ronald Joseph Smore.
He is survived by his daughter, Cheryl (Smore) Monahan and her husband, Robert (Bob) Monahan; his son, Stephen Cornell Smore III and his wife, Mia; his cherished granddaughters, Erin Monahan and Alison (“Ali”) Monahan; as well as nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Steves life at Money and King Funeral Home, 171 W. Maple Ave, Vienna VA on Monday, August 3rd, from 6pm to 8pm. Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady Of Good Counsel Catholic Church, 8601 Wolftrap Rd SE, Vienna, VA on Tuesday, August 4th at 11am. Interment will be at Fairfax Memorial Park immediately following Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The American Cancer Society or to a charity of one’s choice.
