Steven Dale Rockwell
January 20, 1957 ~ November 26, 2021
It is with deep sorrow that we announce Steve Rockwell's passing on November 26, 2021, at the age of 64. He leaves behind his wife of 36 years, Betty; sister Lynn and her husband Paul Maxwell; sister Jan and her husband Steve Linger; and much-loved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Growing up, the Rockwell family split their time between Arlington, VA and Maurertown, VA in the beautiful Shenandoah mountains. Steve grew up with a second set of family and friends in the mountains; many still reside there. He became an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hiking, fishing, stargazing, and creek-sitting. He had an enduring love of Nature and celebrated it with family and friends, folk and bluegrass music, his beloved Golden Retrievers (Cara and Max), and through stewardship of the land.
Steve was a proud graduate of the University of Virginia (class of 1979) with a BS in Civil Engineering. He envisioned himself helping to create a better world. For 30 years, Steve built a successful career as an engineer for Arlington County. It was no accident that he served the county where he was born and raised. A man of deep faith, he and Betty most recently attended Cedar Creek Christian Church in Zepp, Virginia.
Steve was well known by everyone to be kind, unassuming, humble, and decent. He was loved and respected by everyone. A celebration of his life is expected to be held in Northern Virginia around the Easter 2022 timeframe. A smaller celebration will be held in Shenandoah for friends and family there. Announcements will be made at a future time.
Please feel free to express your sympathy to the Rockwell family in the guestbook provided; you may also post photos and/or video and light a candle in his honor. If you wish to donate in Steve Rockwell’s name, consider making a contribution to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (lls.org) whose mission is to further the treatment of these diseases, and to ultimately identify a cure.

Steve loved the banjo
So sorry to hear of Steve’s passing. We grew around the corner from each other. Even though he was a year older than me, we went to the same schools growing up. He was always so kind with a smile on his face. He comes from a Great family. Cherish the memories of Steve. May his eternal light shine forever. Lori Grimm
This is so beautiful Betty. We feel so honored to have been able to know Steve and experience his kind gentle nature and endless positivity. Please know especially we are here for you today and for the tomorrows to come. Peace to you and Steve’s whole extended family.
I am so sorry for you loss. Steve was a great human being. In the county he always ready to help, kind, humble person. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
Steve shared his love of nature and provided gardening tips for my office plants. He ended up adopting my wild violets as he had a great window in an enviable corner office in Arlington County. Location, location, location. You will be missed!
We are very sorry for your loss. I will always remember Steve’s positive energy and smile. We await the funeral details. Much love and prayers during this very difficult time. Aziza
Steve :'( I’m sadden by you leaving this earth but overjoyed that you’re now in the arms of the Lord. Watch and guide your family, friends and loved ones as we navigate our emotions and sort through happy memories. Sleep in eternal peace.
Betty, my heart breaks for you and all who knew and loved Steve. I’ll always remember Steve’s gentle and kind nature and his thoughtfulness. I have such fond memories of spending a few weekends in the Shenandoah mountains with you and Steve and the folks in our bible study. I also remember going to see Hot Rize a favorite bluegrass band of ours. If I am able, I will come to his memorial service at Easter time. We have lost a dear soul but heaven has gained a wonderful saint! Prayers continue for you as you go through the grieving process. —Karen Noren Bost
May you rest in peace, Steve. I pray that your your family sustains the strength to go through this terrible loss.
Steve and Betty have been long time friends! Steve was a Godly man who loved nature and being with friends in the Shenandoah mountains. He was lots of fun and I will always remember time there with both of them and fishing for trout in the creek! We have so many fond memories to cherish forever! He will be missed so much! I will continue to pray for you Betty and am always here for you as well! Love, Robin
I know that I have met living angels on earth but none with a truer halo as Steve Rockwell’s. Chapel Drive will never be the same without him on the block…. I can think of so many wonderful memories with Steve, especially at block parties sharing the “wines” that he and Betty crafted so creatively. He was the best neighbor anyone could ever ask for and I am so much richer for having witnessed and benefited from his “halo”! One favorite memory was watching the “neighborhood men” shovel the entire street after being out of power and a buried street for days during the famous “snowmageddon” of 2010.
