Sue Mahorner Martin

Sue Mahorner Martin passed in her sleep on June 28, 2018. She was born in 1935 in Alabama and spent most of her youth in Jacksonville, Fl. In the late 1950's she met her husband, Sam Thornton Martin, Jr at the University of Florida, where they were studying for their Masters. They eloped in 1959, spending their honeymoon on a boat on the Inland Waterway.
She was a Renaissance woman and adapted early to the latest technology. Both she and her husband Sam were very interested in the Frank Lloyd Wright style architecture, their house in Great Falls was designed by one of his students. She was a devoted to the Arts, attending Kennedy Center and area Ballets, Concerts, Operas, Plays and Symphonies for many years. Sue loved swimming and tennis. She traveled worldwide and all over the United States in order to visit numerous art exhibits, museums, Churches, Cathedrals and other historic sites. She studied the Arts, theology, the Bible, gardening, gourmet cooking, ikebana; politics and history just to name a few.
She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Alter Guild, Dames of the American Revolution, Gourmet Lunch Group, Great Falls Garden Club, the Great Falls Widower Group. League of Women Voters and was a Lay Reader in her Church.
Sue was an avid Democrat, her husband Sam was an avid Republican and they were happily married. Both were strong supporters of the Civil Rights Movement and Martin Luther King.
She is survived by her three daughters, Katherine Palmer, Frances Martin-Falanga, and Susan Martin Young; three sons-in-law, Mark Palmer, Thomas Falanga, and Derek Young; and three grandchildren Elizabeth Van Wazer and David Palmer and Elizabeth’s husband William Van Wazer.
A Memorial Service will be held on July 12 at 2pm, St. John’s Episcopal Church, 6715 Georgetown Pike, McLean, VA. 22101. In lieu of flowers please send donations in her memory to St John’s Episcopal Church in McLean, VA or from your heart to your favorite charity. So sorry to hear about your mom. She was a great comfort to me when we were loosing our father. The last time I spoke to her, she spoke of a cruise she had taken with you all and how much fun it had been for her. She love it! As she told me the story I remember thinking to myself, she was full of adventure, even late in life, just like her brother, Glad you guys got that time together before she passed. Sorry for your loss.

I lived next door on Rollins Drive as your favorite babysitter. Sue and Sam were part of my education, Sue with her calm knowledge, and Sam with his passionate interests. Sue introduced me to yogurt and Sam helped with calculus. Blessings on your three little girls.
