Sutton Hannigan Resler
April 27, 1987 – October 7, 2025

Sutton Hannigan Resler, 38, of Washington, D.C., passed away unexpectedly, leaving behind a world that was brighter for having known him.

Born in Atlanta, Georgia, on April 27, 1987, Sutton was the beloved son of Barclay Thurston Resler II and Lorita Hannigan Resler, and the cherished brother of Barclay Thurston Resler III; Keagan Resler Lenihan and her husband, Brian John Lenihan, and their children, Tallon, Collins, and Emma; and Pierce Resler Coffee and her husband, R. Bryce Coffee, and their children, Brooks, Cullen, and Tierney.

Sutton lived in DuPont Circle, where his originality, humor, and warmth drew people into his orbit. He had a magnetic presence—one that made everyone around him feel seen, appreciated, and at ease. He was the life of the party and the heart of his many circles of friends.

A gifted writer and avid reader, Sutton combined creativity, intellect, and wit in everything he did. He built a successful career while also living life expansively—traveling to all seven continents, spending a year living and working in Tokyo, and never missing a chance to immerse himself in new foods, cultures, and adventures.

Sutton had an infectious sense of humor, an unmatched gift for storytelling, and a flair for fun—never hesitating to design a theme, serve a look or dance the night away if it made a moment more joyful. He was confident, self-deprecating, utterly authentic and unapologetically proud of who he was.

Above all, Sutton loved deeply—his family, his friends, and the wide, beautiful life he created. His light, laughter, and kindness will be forever missed and always remembered by the countless people whose lives he touched.

His family will gather with loved ones to celebrate his remarkable life on Sunday, November 9, from 4pm to 8pm at Wild Days at The Eaton Hotel in Washington, D.C.

In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring Sutton’s memory with a donation to BeyGOOD or SMYAL — two organizations that reflect his values, compassion, and belief in equality and opportunity for all.

He lived, loved, and shone — one of one, the only one.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. With all the love in my heart. So grateful to have had Sutton in my life. He uplifted me on my worst days and he was one of my biggest cheerleaders. He introduced me to so much and I know we will meet again.

  2. In memory of Sutton Hannigan Resler whose great heart and engaging personality lightened all our lives, from his Aunt Nancy and Charles Peek

  3. Sutton was a wonderful child who grew into a wonderful man. Smart, observant, insightful and joyous, he was a rare addition in the world. When his visits to south Florida coincided with mine, I knew a good time was to be had. MY thoughts are with his parents and siblings in their loss.

  4. My memory of Sutton is on the sidelines of the Holy Child field, with Barclay and his parents, cheering on his talented sisters. I admired deeply the loyalty and support the Resler siblings showed one another. My deep sympathy to Keegan and Pierce, to the Resler family, to all those who loved Sutton.

  5. I had the honor of meeting Sutton at the last show of Cowboy Carter tour in Vegas on 7/26/2025. I went by myself and walked into the pit alone, looking for a friendly face to sit by. I spotted Sutton and was drawn to him. I went up and asked if I could sit with him and he said “yes girl” and welcomed me with open arms. We spent the next 7 hours sharing Beyonce concert stories, saving spots to go get merch and snacks, and dancing and singing our hearts out once the show started. We witnessed THE Destiny’s Child surprise appearance and screamed at the top of our lungs. Beyonce ended the show saying, “We remember these nights, and we take these nights with us forever and forever.” I will never forget this night and spending it with Sutton made it so much more special. Though I only meet Sutton once, his impact will live with me forever. The brightest light that shone not for ego, but for others to realize how bright their light could shine too. His joy, swag, fierceness, and free-ness was so contagious and liberating. I will never not go to a Beyonce concert and think about Sutton and the once in a lifetime moments I was lucky enough to share with a beautiful soul.

  6. I had the pleasure of meeting Sutton at the final Beyoncé Cowboy Carter show in Vegas back in July. We clicked instantly, and it felt like family from the start. Hearing about his passing was devastating and simply heartbreaking. He was all light, life, and the kind of energy that filled a room without trying. The world truly lost a star. The sky doesn’t shine quite the same now.
