Tai Elizabeth Burkholder, 48, passed away on September 15, 2025, after a brave and fiercely determined five-year battle with cancer. She leaves behind her loving husband, Joseph Lavin; her two cherished daughters, Teagan Alexandra Lavin and Bexley Ann Lavin; her devoted parents, Ervin and Christina Burkholder; her sister and lifelong confidante, Zoe Burkholder; her best friend and cousin Sabrina Miesowitz; her ever-loyal dog and sidekick, Brewster; and an incredibly long list of very dear friends whose love and support boosted her spirits and made her feel loved, always.
Tai was raised in McLean, Virginia, and graduated from The Madeira School, where her passion for storytelling and the arts first began to shine. She earned her B.A. from the University of Virginia in women and gender studies and later fulfilled a lifelong dream by attending New York University’s prestigious film school. There, she honed her craft and launched a vibrant career in film production, contributing to projects such as Heterosexuals, That’s What She Said, Tri, and Jessabelle.
When Tai became a mother, she discovered a profound joy in raising her daughters. She pivoted her career to be closer to home and returned to The Madeira School—this time as Alumnae Relations & Special Events Manager—pouring her heart and creativity into building community in a place she loved.
Tai was many things—sharp, hilarious, generous, and utterly unforgettable. A devoted fan of horror films, she made Halloween an art form, hosting legendary parties with just the right mix of spooky and spectacular. She lit up every karaoke stage she stepped on, usually bringing down the house. Board games? Don’t even try—Tai played to win and usually did, with a sparkle in her eye and a clever quip at the ready.
She was the life of every room and the soul of every gathering. She met her match in Joe, a partner who matched her humor beat for beat and loved her endlessly. They adventured together around the world, including an unforgettable honeymoon in Antarctica. Her daughters, Teagan and Bexley, were the heart of her world—her greatest joy and most meaningful legacy.
Tai’s spirit was magnetic, her laughter contagious, and her impact lasting. Those lucky enough to know her will carry her light forward—with every shared laugh, every bold move, and every late-night singalong.

With everlasting love,
Rema
