On October 10, 1962, Tom enlisted in the Air Force and served for four years in South Korea, Germany and Belgium. After completing his service, Tom headed to the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque to finish his education. During a brief return to the community in NYC where he grew up, Tom met his future wife, Mary Ann. They were married in Albuquerque, on September 26, 1970.

After graduation from the University of New Mexico, Tom began a career in the FBI. While in the FBI, he developed his lasting interest in languages and studied at the Monterey Language Institute in California.

Pursuing his love of all kinds of music, he volunteered for 20 plus years at Wolf Trap for the Performing Arts. During the more than 37 years that Tom lived in Shouse Village, he was an active member in the community serving on the Architectural Control Committee and Swim Team Committee.

He loved walking the Shouse paths and birdwatching. Summers would find him hiking the trails in Acadia National Park with his wife, the girls and other family members.

In retirement, Tom, who loved to travel, volunteered at Dulles Airport for Travelers Aid enabling him to assist passengers with their various needs. Tom also taught ESL to individuals preparing for citizenship at St. Mark parish.

Guestbook

  1. The Owners and Staff at the Money and King Funeral Home, wish to express our sincere sympathy to you. It is our hope that we may be able to make a difficult time more bearable. Please feel free to call us anytime as we are always available to you.

    Bob Gallagher
    Funeral Director

  2. I always liked Tom. He would. Ome down to Jacksonville every so often and would make a stop to see and visit dad (Eneas Begley) while dad was still alive on his way to see his sister Marie. It is sad that he is gone. Been praying for him.

  3. Please accept my profound condolences to Tom’s family and friends. Tom and I were volunteer partners for many years. He was an amazing man who clearly adored his family – and was patient and good-humored with our customers. I will certainly miss our camaraderie and his welcoming approach to our volunteer work.

  4. My deepest sympathy to Toms close friends and family. Tom and I overlapped on our volunteer shifts at Dulles Airport. He was usually very early giving us plenty of “chat” time. He always talked about and expressed his love and pride in his family…….. especially the footballing (soccer) skills of his grandson, who he was convinced, would be a “star” one day. Maybe Tom can use his influence to make it happen. Malcolm Mason

  5. Deepest sympathies to all the Searby family on the passing of Tom. We have lovely memories of his visits back to his family roots in Carrandine, Co. Mayo, Ireland. Thinking of you all at this sad time.
    Doreen Kelly and family.

  6. Auntie Marie –
I know this is a hard day for your but we are thinking of you and sending big hugs. Thomas sure was handsome, and it seems like he led a very purpose filled life. I hope today is beautiful!

    Love you,
    Jolene, Ben, and Charlie

  7. Searby family,

Our deepest sympathies to you and your family. Your father’s legacy will live on through the love and wisdom he passed on to you. May you find strength in his memory and know that we are with you during this difficult time. We have made a donation in his name to Friends of Acadia to honor his memory.
