Wadia Y. Murshed

wadia murshed

January 18, 1951 ~ June 18, 2024

Born in: Zarqa, Jordan
Resided in: Arlington, Va

Wadia Murshed, 73, of Arlington, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on June 18th, 2024.

She was born in Zarqa, Jordan, on January 18, 1951 – the oldest daughter of Yousef Yacoub Sawaged and Martha Yousef Sawaged – and one of nine children in a loving Christian family.

She married Nawaf Murshed in Jordan in 1969 and followed him with their three small children (Munzer, Roni and Rana) to the United States a few years later in 1977.

Wadia was fiercely loyal and wholly devoted to her children and family. As a new immigrant, she threw herself completely into working in a new country where she picked up night shifts and side jobs to better provide for them. Later, she enrolled in cosmetology school and spent the next 30 years working as a beautician at the Hair Cuttery in Arlington, Virginia, eventually earning her way up to store manager, where she was beloved by staff and customers alike. She was always impeccably put together and took pride in helping others look their best.

Wadia was as big-hearted as she was hard-working, acting as a haven and launching pad for other relatives and immigrants making their new starts in America. There was no one to whom she was not eager to lend a helping hand or open her home.

Above all else, Wadia was perhaps best known for her wonderful, generous and infectious laugh. She always spoke her mind but not without levity and a lightness of spirit. Her fiery passion and sense of humor more than outsized her small and elegant frame.

Wadia had a deep and abiding Christian faith which sustained her through life’s ups and downs. She was a dedicated and long-time member of the Arabic Baptist Church, where she counted many there as her brothers and sisters in the faith. She did not shy away from asking the hard questions and fervently seeking prayer –– even as she held on to hope in challenging seasons. In her final years, even when it became increasingly difficult for her to physically hold up her Bible due to her struggle with Parkinson’s, she could still be seen resting it on a pillow and reading from it daily. Whenever she caught sight of a loved one, she would crack a smile even when her words and strength were gone. Her positive, upbeat and indomitable spirit remained, even to the end.

Wadia is preceded in death by her daughter, Rana, and son, Munzer. She is survived by her husband Nawaf, her son, Roni Murshed, her daughters-in-law Irene and Paula, her son-in-law Mark Engel, and her five grandchildren — Alexandros (18), Maximos (15), Olivia (15), Mason (13), and Leonides (9) – who meant the whole world to her.

Wadia’s life and memory will be celebrated on June 28th, 2024 at 11am. Funeral services will be held at Money and King Funeral Home 171 Maple Avenue West, Vienna Virginia 22180 with a mercy meal to follow.
