Wanda J. McKowen

10 June 1929 – 2 January 2026

Wanda Jane McKowen, nee Isbell passed away on January 2, 2026 at home in the care of her family, who loved her. She lived to be 96.

Wanda was born to Gladys Mae (Chilcoat) Isbell and John Robert Isbell in Wewoka, Oklahoma in 1929. She adored her brothers, John and Dave Isbell. Wanda’s father worked in the oil industry, assignments lasting one to three years, so the family moved often between Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas. Gladys moved her family to San Diego, California, when Wanda finished grade school.

After Point Loma High School, Wanda received a teaching degree from San Diego State College. These were pivotal years as she had become a Christian and was growing and maturing in her faith.

Wanda met Emmett McKowen, who was a speaker at an Intervarsity Christian Fellowship gathering. He planned to live and work in Afghanistan, she, in Iran. After their engagement, they took cross-cultural and language translation classes from Wycliff Bible Translators. Immediately after their marriage they moved overseas.

Wanda and Emmett raised four daughters in Afghanistan, Guatemala, Brazil, Turkey and Northern Virginia. They ended their career with 15 years of teaching in Saudi Arabia. Throughout her life, Wanda was faithful to her high calling to be a teacher, a loving wife and dedicated mother. After retiring to the U.S., Wanda and Emmett taught, hosted and encouraged many international students and professionals. She was also a discussion leader for Bible Study Fellowship women’s classes.

Wanda was a living example of forgiveness, contentment and gratitude. A recipient of God’s grace, mercy and love, she has entered her new life as holy, incorruptible and beyond reproach, in the presence and fellowship with her Lord and Savior forevermore.

Wanda is preceded in death by Emmett, husband of sixty years, by Christine McKowen Haas, her youngest daughter who died in 2023, as well as by her two brothers, John W. Isbell and K. David Isbell.

Together, she and Emmett had four daughters, 13 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Her legacy includes 54 descendants (including spouses), for whom Wanda prayed every day.

Wanda will be interred at Quantico National Cemetery.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, January 22, 2026, at McLean Presbyterian Church. Light reception following.

In lieu of flowers, tax deductible donations can be made to Tat Stewart (worldwitness.org, online designation to Tat and Pat Stewart).

Tat’s lifelong work of reaching and discipling Iranians was deeply important to

Wanda & Emmett, whose friendship and work ran parallel over the decades.

Guestbook

    • Wow! What an amazing woman! Her investment into people will continue for ages to come until we’re all called home to glory.

  1. What an amazing life she had.
When we used to go to the same church with Ms. Wanda, I was struck by her love for books. I still remember how interesting our conversation was about Jane Eyer despite our big age difference!

  2. What a good life, sharing God’s love and the gospel and raising children who do the same. I had the honor of meeting her one day and yes she was an avid reader and had read nearly all of Paul Johnson. She was loved and now all know she is with the Lord. ✝️

    • Thanks for this, Fawn. Because of Mariam’s insights and stories about her mother, I felt like I knew her and benefitted from her love of the Lord, his Word and his people. And I learned from Mariam and sisters, how they cared so well for their precious mom. Gospel hope! – Kelly

  3. While I never had the opportunity to get to know Wanda personally, I knew her through her beautiful daughter, my dear friend, Karen, and the stories she shared about her mother’s faith and love for the Lord.

“Make me know Thy ways, O Lord; teach me Thy paths. Lead me in Thy truth and teach me, for Thou art the God of my salvation. For Thee I wait all the day.” (Psalm 25:4-5)

A beautiful life; a powerful witness.

  4. Mariam, what a life she lived! Over the past few years, because you shared insights and stories about your dear mother, I (and others) also benefited from her love of the Lord, his Word and his people. And I learned from you, how you and your sisters cared so well for your precious mom. Gospel hope, what a reunion it will be! Well done, good and faithful daughter! Love, Kelly

  5. Ms. Wanda will always be remembered. Ms. Wanda was so kind, gentle, caring, compassionate, nurturing, and loving. I am grateful for the time that I spent with Ms. Wanda enjoying great conversations, laughs, and discussions about scriptures from the Bible. Ms. Wanda’s love for the Lord, her family, and for life was a topic of discussion on every visit. The wisdom and knowledge that Ms. Wanda shared with me will last my lifetime. I thank the family for their kindness, generosity, and thoughtfulness. To the family, May your wonderful memories with Ms. Wanda fill your hearts with joy and lift your spirits during this difficult time. 🙏🏼❤️🦋
