William R. “Bill” Buterbaugh died Monday, June 3, 2024 at his home in Vienna, Virginia. The second son of Elmer E. “Butch” and June (Burns) Buterbaugh, Bill was born in the Village of Deckers Point, Indiana County, Pennsylvania on July 13, 1939. He attended the one room Deckers Point school and graduated from Marion Center Joint High School in 1956. In 1961 he graduated from Penn State with a major in Accounting. Following graduation, Bill located to the Washington, DC, area and worked for an accounting firm until hired by the Federal Government. He spent his career in DC, first with the Securities and Exchange Commission and then with Housing and Urban Development. He achieved the professional designation of Certified Public Accountant (CPA).

On August 6, 1966, Bill was joined in Holy Matrimony with Ruth Anne Carhart by her father, Rev. Douglas M. Carhart in the Marion Center Presbyterian Church. That union produced two sons, Craig and Mark. Following his retirement, Bill enjoyed gardening, wood-working and making things for the shop he and Ruth Anne had at a vintage and antique market. They enjoyed traveling to the beaches of Florida, various National Parks and visits to Greece, Mexico and England.

In addition to Ruth Anne and his sons, Craig and Mark of Virginia, Bill is survived by his brothers Jim of Atlanta, Georgia, and Ken of Ashburn, Virginia, and several Nieces and Nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters, Joann Ketterer and Marlene Black.

Bill was a 48-year member of Vienna Presbyterian Church where he had served as a Trustee.

A Lifetime Member of the Penn State Alumni Association, Bill was an avid supporter of the Penn State Nittany Lions, the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

A memorial service will be held on August 10, 2024, in the Chapel of Vienna Presbyterian Church. There will be a time of visitation from 12 to 1 PM in the Church parlor.
