It was an honor to call Bill a friend, and a blessing to have been one of his patients. A more knowledgeable, caring, and compassionate physician, I cannot imagine. Following surgery in 2011, I literally owe my good health to him. My sincere condolences to Will, Ann, Gerard, and the entire family.
My condolences to the Maxted family. I had been a patient since the 1980s. Can you imagine … I actually looked forward to my 6 month check-ups. Every visit was like going to med school. Dr. Maxted’s warmth, thoughtfulness and compassion will be greatly missed.
It was a privilege and a pleasure to have been treated by Dr. Maxted. He was a very caring, kind and compassionate individual who always managed to make room in a very busy schedule for someone he hardly knew, but who needed his attention. He will be greatly missed and will be in my prayers – although I’m sure he doesn’t need them.
Mayhis soul rest in peace.
My condolences to the Maxted family. I started my residency 1 yr after Bill joined the urology staff. He was a mentor and role model during those years and remainded a respected colleague and friend for 50 years
Over 30 years ago, Dr. Maxted served as a important mentor to me when I was a Georgetown undergrad doing my first real research. He was on the medical school admissions committee then and I’m fairly certain he put in a good word for me – and the rest is history. I met my wife, another Georgetown medical student, have had the opportunity to serve in a variety of positions in the military and academic medicine, and none of that would have happened without his assistance. He was always a role model to me and I, along with many others, will miss his caring and professional manner. He was truly a “physician’s physician” with a strong love of medicine, his patients and Georgetown. My prayers are with him and the entire Maxted family.
Dr Maxted will live in all the students and residents he had trained and will forever leave his mark on Urology. Sadly, he will be missed.
I strarted working at GTUH in 1965 and knew Dr.Maxted professionally and his wife personally as a pt. in the OB/GYN office I worked in. Such wonderful people…
Dr. Maxted was a very influential person in my life. I have never been around someone so giving and unselfish. He was an amazing dean, doctor, mentor and most importantly a friend. He will live on in all the lives he has touched as we try to emmulate his generosity. May he rest in peace. God bless his family
Bill maxted was the reason I chose Urology. I came under his influence at an early age as a medical student and was impressed by his gentle manner, kindness, compassion as well as his incredible knowledge and surgical skill. It is staggering to consider how many lives have been saved, improved and touched not only by Bill’s personal intervention but also by the intervention of thousands of students and residents that he trained. He was a truly great man, physician, teacher and friend. We all mourn his loss, yet at the same time we understand that the world is a much better place because he was here and are thankful for that.. Please convey my heart felt consolences to his children Ann, Will ,and Gerard and to his grandchildren. Bill Dougherty GT Med 78 Res 83
Dr. Maxted is the reason I am a physician today. I will be thankful eternally for his mentorship and teaching me a passion for the vocation of medicine. M’97
I am one of the anonymous, countless, adoring patients, as the obituary noted. Dr. Maxted was an outstanding physician and extraordinary human being. His deep konwledge of Urology, dedication to patient care and talent in analyzing complex issues made him a legend in the Washington community. May his memory be eternal!
For Dr. William Maxted I was saddened by the Washington Post obituary, Will, and wish to convey my most sincere condolences to you and the entire Maxted family. Even though I never met your father, I learned a lot about him just from the respectful and loving descriptions you shared with me in recent office visits, as well as from the many tributes written by friends on this website. It’s clear that he exhibited exceptional commitment, integrity, sensitivity and skills in professional duties and personal relationships. May you and the entire Maxted family find comfort and joy in the Lord’s blessings and special memories of an extraordinary father.
Without a doubt, Dr. Maxted was the guiding influence in my training as a physician. His combination of surgical knowledge, compassion, wisdom and a keen ability to inspire and educate young trainees was unparalleled. I firmly believe that no Professor at Georgetown University Hospital ever had a more positive influence on so many medical students and residents. My warmest wishes and prayers are extended to the Maxted family in celebrating his magnificent contributions to Georgetown and every individual life that he touched. R ’89 Steve Dejter, Jr.
I first met Dr. Maxted in April of 1965. He was the first doctor I saw in Washington after moving from Michigan in late 1964. He was an absolutely wonderful doctor, who ALWAYS was there to help me no matter the problem. About 2 years ago, when he told me was going to retire in mid 2011, he said that he was pretty sure I was his SECOND longest continuing patient..45 years!! My deepest sympathy to his children and family. Dick Malow
Bill had a remarkable gift for understanding what others needed to know and a very graceful way of sharing with them his good sense, advice and wisdom. He remains in our thoughts and prayers as the finest of friends.
To the Maxted Family, Your dad was our friend, doctor and colleague. May he rest in peace. We are sorry that we are unable to attend the service. Sincerely, Dr. Joe & Mary Swift

I spent much of my childhood at Georgetown and have been forever thankful for the care he gave me. His kindness, patience and fortitude were always evident. What a gift he was to the medical community. I will never forget him! God bless him in his new heavenly home. My deepest sympathies to his family.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Maxted family at this difficult time. Dr. Maxted was a true paragon of virture. He was my Dean, mentor, personal physician, and a model of unstinting loyalty to Georgetown Medical School. We will pray for him, but more importantly, hopefully he will pray for us.
To the Maxted family, I would like to offer you my most profound condolences on the passing of a wonderful human being. I had known Dr. Maxted as a medical student at Georgetown and then as a resident in Urology and have only the fondest memories. He has served as my teacher, role model, advisor and friend. I am indebted to him forever for shaping me into the doctor that I am today. May God bless you and keep you Dr. Maxted.
To Bill’s family, I have had the honor and pleasure of serving as a Eucharistic Minister with Bill at Saint Luke Church in McLean. Bill was always such a gentleman, friend, humble and so very accomplished. We will miss him! Harlan & Becky Bittner
To the Maxted Family, Your father was a very special person who devoted his life to God, family, friends and his patients, a true servant of the Lord in every way. He and Claire were outstanding parents whose legacy is commendable. I will always remember them with the feeling that the world was a better place because of people like Bill and Claire. Your father’s love will help you through this period of mourning. Parents never leave you, they are always in your hearts.

Kathy Bruhn, a patient of Dr. Maxted’s for 3 decades wishes to express her condolences to the family of William Maxted on his passing.
Dr. Maxsted was an incredible doctor and human being. Two years ago he broke the news to me that I had prostate cancer. He did it in such a kind and gentle way that it almost seemed like a relief. I finally knew what was wrong. He was patient, calming, but very thorough and direct in describing my situation. Because he was so conscientious in monitoring me for a few years beforehand, the cancer was caught and eradicated early on, and I am cured. I will miss him tremendously as I am sure many others will too. He set the standard for bedside manners and medical care.
I knew Dr Maxted from Georgetown. He was a wonderful man and Doctor. He was very patiet and I will remember his kindness to me on many occasions.
Dr. Maxted took care of my husband when he had surgery for cancer in 1978. Thankfully my husband recovered completely but he continued his professional relationship with Dr. Maxted on and off over the years. He was always kind and compassionate. He always took time out of his incredibly busy schedule to return my husband’s calls and was never in a hurry to end the conversation. We thought so much of Dr. Maxted that our son’s middle name is William in his honor. My heart goes out to your family. Know that Dr. Maxted will not be forgotten.
Doctor Maxted was my favorite doctor of all time. I saw him a number of times each year for over 16 years. He was a dear and fine man whom I got to know over the procedure he would perform, trying to keep me at ease. He would share his thoughts and always ask me about my next trip and current endeavors. I miss him and know I shall not find another care giver quite like Dr. Maxted.
I am saddened to here of Dr Maxted passing. He was a wonderful doctor, and dedicated teacher, who helped shape and influence many doctors. He will be missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
Our hearts are with the Maxted family. We know he was a fine person and dad because his namesake son is also a wonderful, skilled doctor.
