William H. Hecht

William H. Hecht , age 83, passed away on Monday, June 12 in his home in Vienna, Virginia. Bill was the beloved husband of Susan Hecht and loving father of Herb, the late Robert David, Tim, and Jim, and father-in law of Dana, Jill and Melissa. Bill was a doting grandfather to Caroline, Rachel, Will, Robbie, Christian, Danny, Hannah, Sammy, Holly and Johnny, and loving brother-in-law to Jim and Linda Vogt and uncle to Katherine and Mark Vogt.
Bill was born on September 13, 1933 in Tifton, Georgia. After completing his
Bachelor's degree, he received a Master's of Divinity from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri and an M.A. degree in philosophy from Washington University. He began his ministry as a Lutheran pastor at Faith Lutheran Church in Mt. Vernon, Ill. He later served as campus pastor at the University of Oklahoma, where he also taught in the Philosophy department. A lifelong participant in politics and government affairs, Bill in 1967 became the executive director of the Missouri State Republican Party. In 1969 he served as vice president of the American Security Council. In 1971, he became Executive Assistant to the chairman of the House Committee on Internal Security and subsequently left government to serve as vice president for legislative affairs at the Tobacco Institute. After working in the Reagan for President Campaign, Bill in 1981 started Hecht, Spencer & Associates, a successful government relations firm he has helped to lead to the present day.
Bill received the Miles Christi (Soldier of Christ) Award from Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Indiana, the Distinguished Alumni Award from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis; and an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Concordia University Wisconsin, Mequon. The National Capital Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America bestowed the Silver Beaver Award for distinguished Service to Youth, and in 2012, Bill was chosen as one of three persons to receive an "Outstanding Georgian" commendation from the Georgia state Legislature.
Bill was a published author, respected political advisor, St. Louis Cardinal's fan, dog lover, and loving and proud father and grandfather. He was a regular figure at the Capitol Hill Club, where he liked nothing more than to share camaraderie and political conversation with his many wonderful friends in Washington D.C.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday June 14 between 5:30 -8:30 PM at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 7426 Idylwood Rd. Falls, Church VA. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 15 at 1 PM at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. The burial will be in Flint Hill Cemetery in Oakton, VA at 3 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Herbert William Hecht scholarship fund at Concordia, Seminary, St. Louis Missouri.
