Mrs. O’Malie was born on February 19, 1932 at her maternal grandfather’s estate in Orizaba, Veracruz, Mexico. Mrs. O’Malie’s grandfather was a prominent doctor in Veracruz, Mexico who was also instrumental in the founding of the Mexican Military Medical School. The Canseco family also owned and operated hotels in Veracruz, Mexico. Mrs. O’Malie’s formative years were spent in Mexico City where her father owned and operated an international clothing manufacturing business. Mrs. O’Malie graduated in Mexico City from the prestigious private bilingual school for ladies, Helena Herlihy Hall, where most of her teachers were Irish nuns.
Mrs. O’Malie was married in Mexico City in 1957 to H. David O’Malie whom she met in 1954 while he was studying international relations at Universidad de las Américas. Their son, Sean David O’Malie Canseco, was born in Mexico City in 1961. The couple’s second son was born in Charlston, South Carolina in 1964. The family travelled extensively and lived in Mexico, Panama, Germany, California, South Carolina, Illinois, Massachusetts, and ultimately Springfield, Virginia.
Mrs. O’Malie loved music and the performing arts. She studied and danced ballet and flamenco since childhood. Although Mrs. O’Malie declined to dance professionally, she was urged to do so many times and she remained closely associated with the flamenco world and the renowned flamenco artist, Ramón de Cádiz, who became godfather to her first-born son, Sean.
Mrs. O’Malie was most notably a fiercely loyal, loving, and supportive mother to her two children. Mrs. O’Malie lived life to the fullest and always expressed gratitude for having done so. After raising her two sons, she worked in the educational and legal fields, having served as a Spanish/English interpreter for both the Fairfax County school system, local courts, and in the Northern Virginia legal community. Mrs. O’Malie maintained a rigorous and inspirational daily exercise regime throughout her life and up until the very time she was diagnosed with a terminal condition at the age of 91.
Mrs. O’Malie is preceded in death by her mother Enriqueta García Martínez de Canseco, by her father Fernando Canseco Picco, by her older brother Gerson Enríque Canseco, by her younger sister Gabriella Canseco, and by her beloved younger brother Fernando Maximiliano Canseco. She is survived by extended family in Mexico, by Colonel H. David O’Malie (U.S. Army, retired), and most especially by her devoted son, Sean David O’Malie Canseco, who was ever present throughout her life, during her illness, and at her bedside when she passed.
Mrs. O’Malie will be remembered, and very much missed by those who knew her, as a beautiful and incredibly energetic lady with a larger-than-life personality.
