Born in: Tientsin, China
Resided in: McLean, VA

Yolanda (Yoly) Naughton (née Cortinovis) passed away at her home on September 4, 2025, at the age of 89.

She was born in the Italian Concession of Tientsin, China, in 1936 to Eugenio Cortinovis and Luba Smikoff. She lived in China, Italy, and Peru before moving to the Washington, D.C. area in 1960, where she resided for the next 65 years.

She was fluent in five languages. She put her global background and cultural acumen to use at the International Monetary Fund and World Bank, before leaving the professional world to focus on her family. She was pre-deceased by her beloved husband of nearly 50 years, James R. Naughton, Sr. She is survived by her son, James Richard Naughton, Jr., his wife Deirdre, and their son, Jayden of Vienna; her daughter, Jennifer Ann Naughton of Arlington; her brother, Carlo Cortinovis and his wife Antuca, and cherished nieces, nephews, and friends.

In her final years, Yoly faced her health challenges with quiet strength and dignity, thanks to the support of her wonderful caregivers. She looked forward to visits with loved ones, remained a keen observer of global affairs, and found beauty in nature, art, and the simple joys of life. Her vibrant spirit, insightfulness, and sense of humor will be dearly missed. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Wounded Warrior Project.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Sending thoughts of peace and healing to the Naughton family. Those left behind deal with the grief, but focusing on the moments of joy and special memories can help us get through. One ☝️ f my favorite quotes follows: “The tide recedes and leaves behind bright seashells on the sand. The sun goes down but gentle warmth still lingers on the land. The music stops yet it echoes on in sweet refrains…for every joy that passes something beautiful remains.” Grandchildren and children are a perfect example of this.
    Sending my condolences to all
    of you.
    With deepest sympathies,
    Jennifer
