In Loving Memory of Young Suk Buckwalter
October 25, 1950 – August 21, 2023
Young Suk Buckwalter, whose life was a testament to her unwavering love for her family and deep devotion to her faith, passed away on August 21, 2023.
Young was born on October 25, 1950, in Busan, South Korea. She graduated from Hyehwa Girls High School and Busan Women’s College, where her studies included traditional Korean dance. Young attended church services at the Busan military base where, in 1979, she met SGT Jack Buckwalter. They were married in April 1980 and moved to the United States later that year. Over the course of more than 43 years, they shared a marriage brimming with love for each other, devotion to each other, and laughter with each other.
Young and Jack were blessed with three daughters, Crystal, Kaleena and Jessica, who were the center of Young’s world. Young was a loving and devoted wife, mother and halmony who would move mountains (and many apartments and houses when called upon) for her family. She never let her daughters forget how smart and special they are, instilled in them the belief that nothing is impossible and the importance of finding joy in every day.
Young’s life was marked by her unwavering faith. Ordained as a minister by Neil T. Jones at Columbia Baptist Church in 1995, she started her journey in ministry. She earned her Ph.D. from Washington Baptist University in 2009 and found great inspiration within the pages of the Bible, which she avidly read and discussed. At family gatherings, she led those she loved in prayer, guided them through scripture readings, and filled their voices and hearts with song. Her faith was a source of strength and comfort, and she shared it generously with all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Young was predeceased by her father Chong Kyu Son and her mother Bong Hui Kim, and is survived by her husband, Jack Buckwalter, daughters Crystal (Brian) Wilbourn, Kaleena (Corey) Verdusco, and Jessica Buckwalter, stepchildren Steele Buckwalter and Mikki Maxwell, grandchildren, Cora (11 yo), Ellie (8 yo), Corbin (7 yo), Jacqueline (5 yo), and Cortland (7 months), her brother Young Bae Son, and her sisters Young Sin Son, Young Ha Son, and Young Gasper.
Young leaves behind a legacy of love and faith, and a lifetime of cherished memories for all who were fortunate to know her.
