June Lavington, 84 years old, passed away on April 24, 2022, at Arlington Hospital Center after a brief illness. June was preceded in death by her parents, JD and Hazel Watford of Tallahassee, Florida. June is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Michael Lavington, and her two daughters Susan Lavington (Michael Welther) of Alexandria, Virginia, and Victoria Lavington (Michael Carrasquillo) of Staten Island, New York; her two sisters, Tara Smith of Tallahassee, Florida, and Toija DeHoll (Chris) of Raleigh, North Carolina; six beloved grandchildren, Leigh, Emma, Max, and Sarah Welther and Sylvia and Philip Carrasquillo; her nieces, nephew, and cousins.

Raised in Florida, June won a full scholarship from the Dupont Foundation to attend Florida State University, where she received her BA and MA in Biology. June then moved to New York City to study at NYU and teach. In NYC, she met her future husband, Michael, a student at Columbia University. June and Michael married in Michael’s native England and lived on three continents, finally settling in Northern Virginia to raise their family. June was a lifelong activist who participated in the civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s and the women’s rights movement in the 1970s and 1980s. June retired from Fairfax County Public Schools, where she was a biology teacher and then enjoyed her retirement traveling and enjoying her family.

A celebration of June’s life will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2022, at 11:00 AM at Money and King Funeral Home in Vienna, VA.
