Evelyn Ruth Simms, age 85, of Norfolk, Virginia, passed away on May 27th in Dunn Loring due to congestive heart failure.

Evelyn Simms was born in Norfolk to Leroy and Inez Cartwright on March 22nd, 1935. She was the youngest of four sisters and two brothers whom she adored. Eve married Russell Simms on August 31st, 1957 in Falls Church, Virginia. She worked for the telephone company, Cavalier Cars, and The Jefferson as the supervisor of Switchboard Operations and Resident Liaison for 20 years. Evelyn received the prestigious Employee of the Year Award and was referred by the residents as, “their own southern belle.” Eve retired at the age of 77 to take care of her husband, who had recently been diagnosed with dementia.

Her life was a living example of Matthew 22:37-39 regarding the greatest commandment. “Jesus said, “Love the Lord God with all your heart, with all of your soul, and with all of your mind…and the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.” Evelyn was known for 3 things: her love for Christ, her love for family, and her love for people. However, we would be amiss not mentioning a close 4th, her passion for fashion! She fiercely loved people and was a constant prayer warrior from the moment she received Christ as her Savior in 1986. Evelyn cherished her church, Grace Community where she faithfully served for nearly 20 years. But first and foremost she was a dedicated mother and grandmother where she taught us a strong work ethic and to love ALL people. Countless family and friends have been impacted by her prayers and in her later years, it gave her meaning and purpose because this was her way of serving and loving others.

She is preceded in death by her son Mark, and more recently her husband Russell, for whom she was married to just shy of sixty years. Evelyn is survived by her daughter Krista Slye, son-in-law John Slye, Jr., and grandchildren Jonathan Lee and Evelyn Grace, her namesake. Her love for her family was evident to all who knew her.

A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, June 1st at Columbia Gardens Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia for close friends and family. Due to social distancing restrictions, the graveside will be available to watch on Facebook Live through Krista Slye’s account. A full memorial service will take place later this summer when less restrictions are in place. Arrangements are being made by Money & King Funeral Home.

Memorials may be given to the Grace Community Church COVID-19 Relief fund, where all money raised will go to assisting those in Evelyn’s local area that are struggling during these unprecedented times. The family of Evelyn Simms wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Schreiner, Violetta, Kelly and the Chesterbook Staff, and the Grace Community Church congregation.
