Mrs. Frances P. Strassman, 94, 8315 Turning Leaf Lane McLean, Va., died Sunday, March 28th, 2021, at her residence of natural causes.

She was born June 20, 1926, in Altoona, Pennsylvania, the daughter of John and Lottie Toman and the oldest of three children. She married the love of her life Dr. Jack Strassman on December 12, 1946. He died May 29, 1985.

Mrs. Strassman served her country as a member of the United States Nurse Corps during World War II. She was a member of this brave group of women that saved the country’s healthcare system from collapse after World War II was declared in 1941. She joined the military on March 1, 1944 when she was only 17 years old. She met her husband while working at Mercy Hospital in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Mrs. Strassman completed training as a nurse and along with her husband Dr. Strassman collectively ran a successful medical practice. Dr. and Mrs. Strassman lived most of their lives in Altoona, Pennsylvania along with extended family close by. Along with being a mother and full-time nurse, Frances spent many years caring for her mother, father and other elderly neighbors and was an active member of the Catholic Church. After her husband passed, Mrs. Strassman moved to Reston, Va. to be closer to her daughter and other family members in the DC Metro area.

Surviving are her daughter, Sandra Strassman-Sundy, and her two grandchildren Marc and Eric Sundy of Springfield, Va. Mrs. Strassman was preceded in death by a sister, Josephine, and brother John.



Mrs. Strassman will be buried along with her husband at Mt. Sinai Cemetery on the outskirts of Altoona, Pennsylvania. In lieu of flowers, her family asks that donations be made in memory of Frances Strassman to the Polish Association of Professional Nurses or Meals on Wheels.
